    Description

    POSITION SUMMARY


    The Diabetic Educator is responsible for coordinating the care of the patient with diabetes from admission through discharge and referral.

    It guides, assists, and serves as an expert resource to nursing staff and other health care team members to ensure delivery of high quality care to patients with diabetes.


    The Diabetic Educator provides education to diabetic patients in an acute setting as well as provides both clinical and educational support to health care providers.


    Principal duties and responsibilities include:

    the organization, development, and implementation of Diabetes Education programs in an acute setting; support clinical diabetes care at all units; build on and/or develop relationships with insurance carriers, pharmaceutical companies, and key distributors; provide training/educational programs, presentations, and seminars for patients and health care providers as required.

    Participate in hospital based committees as assigned.


    QUALIFICATIONS

    EDUCATION:
    Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required. BSN preferred.

    LICENSE/


    CERTIFICATION:
    Current license as a registered Nurse in the State of New Jersey. Certification from the American Association of Diabetes Educators as a Certified Diabetic Educator (CDE). BLSHCP required.


    EXPERIENCE:
    Minimum 3-5 years clinical experience and 2-3 years experience in diabetes education required. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as leadership skills. Excellent customer service skills.


    PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
    Demonstrates the competencies as established on the Assessment and Evaluation Tool for this position.


    WORK ENVIRONMENT


    Potential for exposure to the hazards and risk of the hospital environment, including exposure to infection disease, hazardous substances, blood-borne pathogens, and potential injury.

    This position requires sitting at a desk or computer with frequent walking and standing. The essential functions for this position are listed on the Assessment and Evaluation Tool.


    REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
    This position reports to the Director of Clinical Education and indirectly to the Director of Nursing Practices.
