Scope of Job

The South Texas Space Science Institute (STSSI) at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in Brownsville announces the opening of a postdoctoral appointment in its STARGATE Space Technology Group 1 (SG1).

We are particularly interested in hiring creative and highly motivated candidates who are at ease working both collaboratively and independently in a vibrant, interdisciplinary and synergistic group.

Trainee position to pursue research as a vital component of their educational mission and professional career development.

Description of Duties

The South Texas Space Science Institute (STSSI) is an interdisciplinary institute with active research in various areas of Space and Astrophysical Science.

The STARGATE SG1 group is specifically focused on experimental physics and technology development with space applications.

Current areas of research include phased array development (with applications in spacecraft communication and radio astronomy); testing of materials, electronics, and systems in a simulated space environment; and laser systems for space communication, precision metrology, and gravity gradiometry (including applications for space and ground-based gravitational-wave detectors).

The STARGATE project has extensive research equipment and facilities for electronics and antenna testing, printed circuit board fabrication, space environment simulation, rapid prototyping, and laser and optics research.

Supervision Received
General direction from the assigned supervisor.

Supervision Given
May assist in the supervision of undergraduate and graduate students involved in the STSSI research projects.

Required Education

Doctoral degree from an accredited University in Physics or a related field (based on funding restrictions degree may need to have been conferred within a set period of time previous to assuming position).

Required Experience
None.

Preferred Experience
A strong interest in leading research efforts in the Space Technology group and experimental physics.

Equipment
Use of personal computer and proficiency in software and research statistical applications.

Working Conditions
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office/research environment; some travel and weekend work is required. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.

Appointments are for one year, with annual renewal contingent upon satisfactory progress and funding status. The anticipated start date of the positions is immediate but can be delayed if needed. Applications will be considered until the position is filled.
