Senior Claims Representative
The Rhode Island Interlocal Risk Management Trust is seeking an experienced attorney to join our team as a Senior Claims Representative. This role is ideal for a litigation attorney who enjoys analyzing complex cases, developing strategy, and collaborating with counsel without personally handling courtroom appearances or active litigation.
What you'll be doing
You will play a key role in protecting Rhode Island's public sector Member entities by overseeing complex liability claims from initial notice through resolution. While outside defense counsel handles litigation, you will provide strategic oversight, evaluate legal exposure, manage discovery strategy with counsel, assess settlement value, and guide cases through resolution. Reporting to the Claims Manager, you will work closely with Member representatives, defense counsel, claimants, reinsurers, and experts to ensure claims are handled thoughtfully, efficiently, and in alignment with the Trust's mission. This role combines legal analysis, risk evaluation, negotiation, and collaboration offering a sophisticated alternative to traditional litigation practice. Your work will directly support the Trust's financial stability, strengthen Member relationships, and reinforce our reputation as a trusted public sector risk management partner.
You will be responsible for…
- Managing and adjusting liability claims for public sector Members, including complex and high-value cases.
- Investigating claims through site visits, recorded statements, gathering key documentation, and engagement with claimants, witnesses, and experts.
- Evaluating coverage, liability, damages, and exposure, setting and adjusting reserves, and maintaining accurate, well-documented claim files.
- Managing all aspects of legal discovery with assigned legal counsel.
- Directing legal counsel in litigation strategy, expert use, and review of defense costs.
- Attending settlement conferences, mediations and arbitrations as necessary.
- Engaging in, and controlling, settlement negotiations, and pursuing potential contributions from tortfeasors.
- Maintaining diary systems, preparing quarterly reports, and providing clear communication to management, Committees, Board, and reinsurers.
- Supporting risk management activities for Members and contributing to broader Trust operations, including occasional after-hours claim response.
- Providing guidance to Claims Representatives and support staff when requested by the Claims Manager or Director.

- Full-time, 35 hours per week, Salary and Benefits
- Office Location: East Providence, RI
- Monday – Friday, 8:30am – 4:30pm
- Hybrid work schedule available
- Occasional travel within Rhode Island
What skills & experience we'll need from you
- Bachelor's or J.D. degree from an accredited college or university required
- Minimum 5 years in the insurance claims industry or civil litigation experience required
- Advance coursework in law, business, public administration, or insurance/risk management is a plus
- Familiarity with municipal exposures (police, fire, public officials' liability) desirable
- Strong analytical, negotiation, and communication skills
- License required: Rhode Island Insurance Adjuster's license or Rhode Island Bar License
