Job Summary

The Harvard Library seeks a collaborative, strategic, and results-oriented leader for the newly created position of Associate University Librarian for Antiracism.

The ideal candidate for this position will have a broad vision for the role of antiracism in shaping the future of research libraries and achieving institutional excellence, as well as a strong track record in managing change, building and supporting initiatives that promote equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging, and a sophisticated understanding of anti-racism philosophy and resources. With strong support of the library's senior leadership, the AUL for Antiracism will help synthesize, integrate and further catalyze the library's equity, diversity, inclusion, belonging, and antiracism efforts across all aspects of the library's mission.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Vice President (VP) for the Harvard Library and University Librarian and Roy E. Larsen Librarian for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the Associate University Librarian (AUL) for Antiracism is a collaborative leader whose primary focus is the development of the Harvard Library as an exemplary antiracist research library. The AUL serves as an active member of the VP's senior team, sharing in responsibility for library-wide planning and resource allocation, and providing vision and advice on organizational development, diversity and social justice matters, communication strategies, and crisis management. The AUL engages as a thought-leader with colleagues across the Harvard Library and faculty, students and staff across the university in advancing strategies for an inclusive library climate and all aspects of equity, diversity, inclusion, belonging and antiracism in the library's workforce, services, collections and spaces. This includes developing and implementing measurable goals and metrics, and using data, research and evidence-based practice to identify and change systems, structures, policies, practices and individual behaviors that perpetuate systemic racism. The AUL's direct reports are individuals on the library's new antiracism team, which will include librarians with roles such as collection development and research services as well as the Harvard Library Human Resources team's diversity specialist. The AUL builds collaborative relationships with diversity leaders across the university and represents the library on related university councils, and coordinates library responses to emerging local, national, or global events that affect the experience of students, faculty and/or staff from historically marginalized groups and populations.

Job-Specific Responsibilities

• Collaboratively lead in the development of Harvard Library as an exemplary antiracist research library.

• Engage as a thought-leader with colleagues across the Harvard Library and faculty, students and staff across the university in advancing strategies for an inclusive library climate and all aspects of equity, diversity, inclusion, belonging and antiracism in the library's workforce, services, collections and spaces.

• Develop and implement measurable goals and metrics, and use data, research and evidence-based practice to identify and change systems, structures, policies, practices and individual behaviors that perpetuate systemic racism.

• Establish and provide leadership for the library's new antiracism team, which will include librarians with roles such as collection development and research services as well as the Harvard Library Human Resources team's diversity specialist.

• Lead a library-wide antiracism council comprising representatives of libraries across the Harvard Library to inform the work of the antiracism team and facilitate the sharing of best practices.

• Represent the library in campus equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging initiatives and develop collaborative relationships with associated officers in Schools and other units.

• Work with campus leaders to ensure integration of the library's strategies with the university's and all federally mandated civil rights, anti-discrimination and equity policies and laws.

• Identify and pursue opportunities for the library to support education, reconciliation, restoration, and cultural transformation with regard to bias and discrimination against any group or people, including racism in all its forms.

• Represent the library's priorities, values, and projects to peer institutions and beyond in national and international venues dedicated to addressing higher education's role in social justice, antiracism, anti-discrimination, restoration, reconciliation, and accessibility efforts.?

• Coordinate library responses to emerging local, national, or global events that affect the experience of students, faculty and/or staff from historically marginalized groups and populations, and steward relationships with extra-academic communities on which the library depends.

Basic Qualifications

• Demonstrated success in developing and implementing a broad range of diversity initiatives in a complex university environment, or leadership experience gained in another service-oriented or higher education organization requiring coordination and strategic leadership of a diverse range of stakeholders

• 10 + years of relevant experience

Working Conditions
The work associated with this position is currently being performed remotely in response to COVID-19. Work in the longer-term is expected to be conducted through a combination of both remote and on campus presence.

Harvard University is a Massachusetts employer and the selected candidate will be expected to relocate to the Massachusetts area.
