HVAC/R Technician:The HVAC Technician is a working position responsible for HVAC/R (and related/similar) services throughout the campus. It is Facilities Management's goal that the Berkeley campus be as "Transparent" as possible and that our students have a comfortable, clean environment in which to learn. To that end, the HVAC Technician is a 24hr on call position, reacting to environmental needs. During the workday, the HVAC Technician will be responsible for maintaining the indoor climate at a comfortable level through use of the various HVAC systems and other environmental controls about campus. During off hours the systems can be accessed on-line for assessment and/or adjustment. Other primary duties are listed below. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Perform preventive maintenance on all plant HVAC/R equipment.
    • Make routine checks, inspections, and services of plant equipment (e.g. campus energy management controls, heating units, chillers, DX units, VRF systems, building exhaust fans, air handlers/fan coils, ice machines, refrigerators/freezers, etc.) and diagnoses problems and failures in HVAC/R equipment.
    • Make necessary repairs to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems of various sizes from residential split systems up to chiller systems.
    • Installs heating and air conditioning equipment.
    • Replace filters in air handlers/fan coil units.
    • Service and maintain refrigeration equipment, including refrigerators, freezers, water fountains, ice machines, etc. This includes filters, controls, etc.
    • Maintain digital controls system(s).
    • Assist with general maintenance duties as needed.
    • Be on-call to cope with emergency situations. When on-call, is available during off hours to assist with emergencies, or routine issues that require assistance.
    • Is available during scheduled hours via 2-way radio and other communication methods. Is expected to read and answer pertinent emails, calls, texts, etc., in a timely fashion.
    • Support all school policies and procedures.
    • Perform other tasks as assigned. (I.E. Assist with set-ups, etc.)
    Basic Job Requirements:
    • Knowledge and experience working with high- and low-pressure systems, including chillers, package, and split systems, VRF systems, refrigeration systems, water fountains and ice makers.
    • Possess the appropriate current CFC/EPA certifications.
    • Ability to operate computer, CMMS system, tablets/PDA's, etc.
    • Working knowledge of safety procedures and any government regulations applying to the trade.
    • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
    • Must be able to safely operate mechanical lifts and a variety of hand and power tools.
    • Must be able to lift, push, pull a variety of tools, parts, and equipment up to 50 lbs. or greater with appropriate assistance.
    • Frequently works from heights, climbing ladders, working from a lift or ladder, working on roofs, etc.
    • Ability to work within and uphold the philosophy of the Institution, observe institutional regulations, and cooperate fully in the operation of the institution.
    Minimum Qualifications:A minimum of five (5) years experience working on all types of HVAC/R systems withTrade or Vocational school graduation required. The HVAC/R Tech must have completed an approved apprenticeship or equivalent on the job training and have the ability to work with computers and a working knowledge of building automation/energy management software. The HVAC/R Tech must also have a demonstrated ability to communicate well with employees, vendors, and the customer. Exceptional interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively is desired. Performance of job duties require driving a Berkeley Preparatory School vehicle. As such, a current driver's license is required as well as acceptance by Berkeley Preparatory School's automobile insurance company. Compensation and Benefits:The appointment is available immediately and is a full-time, hourly, non-exempt position and eligible for full benefits. The compensation package will be very competitive nationally and commensurate with experience, certification attainment, and the national independent school and college markets.
