Job Title: Principal-Elementary School

Summary: The Elementary Principal is responsible for organizing and fostering a positive, safe environment that is conducive to best meeting the needs of all students, staff, and families. Provides leadership and administration resources to motivate instruction, teaching, and learning and supports the team towards optimum performance in achieving the best possible opportunities for student growth and development. The Principal works to implement an instructional vision and focused plan for improving student achievement while narrowing the disparities between the highest and lowest-performing students. The principal fosters a culture of high expectations, ensures all students have equitable access to high-quality and culturally-relevant instruction and builds strong partnerships with families and the community. Creates a safe, welcoming environment that reflects and supports the racial and ethnic diversity of the student population and communities served. Responsibilities include but are not limited to staffing; staff supervision and evaluation; instructional leadership; curriculum oversight; student, parent, and community relations; student discipline; school safety; and fiscal and facilities management of the elementary school building.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Administrative/Organizational
- Ensures effective community-staff-student relations by promoting communication and participation, identifying needs and planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating the school-community relations activities in a manner that is visible to the public. Promotes parental and community involvement in school and District activities.
- Promote a positive, safe, and caring climate for learning that supports the racial and ethnic diversity of the student population and communities served.
- Represent the school in various settings (e.g., community forums, parent-teacher organizations, etc.) to maintain ongoing community support for educational goals and assist with issues related to the school environment.
- Respond to inquiries from various stakeholders (e.g., parents, students, staff, etc.) to identify relevant issues and recommend or implement action plans.
- Participates in budget planning activities and develops expenditure review and control procedures to ensure a cost-beneficial and cost-effective operational mode.
- Accurately manages building budget, reviews, evaluates, requisitions, purchases, and allocates instructional supplies, materials, and equipment throughout the year.
- Supervise and evaluate school personnel to improve teaching and learning, giving constructive feedback on performance, providing for professional growth, and achieving overall objectives of providing a positive learning environment for student achievement.
- Coordinate various meetings (e.g., curriculum, safety, site council, faculty, etc.) and related activities that ensure that outcomes meet school, District, and state goals, policies, and regulatory requirements.
- Implement policies, procedures, and directives for providing direction and complying with mandated requirements.
- Intervene in occurrences of inappropriate behavior of students to assist students in modifying such behavior and developing successful interpersonal skills.
- Prepare a wide variety of information (e.g., quantity reports, student activities, correspondence, audits, etc.) for documenting activities, providing written references, and conveying information.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Supervises and coordinates the assignment of instructional personnel and student classroom assignments.
- Hires licensed and classified staff and evaluates assigned licensed and classified staff.
- Evaluates assigned personnel to support high standards of teaching and learning.
- Provide training and in-services to staff and families.
- Lead elementary school curriculum and curriculum planning, integration, and execution. Serves as the instructional leader and operational manager of an elementary school facility.
- Work closely with the school staff and site council to identify educational and instructional needs and develop long- and short-range plans to improve the instructional process.
- Assists in implementing instructional strategies, school-wide communication, and student behavior support, including supporting the needs of diverse learners, delivery methods, assessment, and staff development to improve instruction.
- Assumes a leadership role at functions and activities offsite and participates in District advisory committees and groups.
- Assists the educational community in understanding the site and District goals, objectives, and strategies for achieving them.
- Participates in planning, developing, implementing, interpreting, administering policies, rules, and regulations, and negotiating employment agreements.
- Models the leadership characteristics of energy, integrity, high-level communication skills, etc.
- Communicates effectively and cooperatively with all stakeholders using excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Provide leadership and a visible presence at school and community events.
- All Medford School District employees supervise students and maintain a safe environment.
- Supervises staff as assigned.
- Supervise after-school/evening events as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- Previous successful teaching experience is required.
- Experience working with elementary students.
- Must be eligible for or properly licensed by the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission for assignment as an administrator.
- A valid Oregon driver's license is required.
Language Skills: Ability to communicate verbally and in writing fluently in English. Preference may be given to applicants fluent in English and Spanish. Ability to present information and respond effectively to questions in one-on-one, small and large group situations to students and other school staff. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and governmental regulations. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and area. Ability to apply basic concepts of algebra, geometry, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to complete instructions furnished in written, oral, schedule, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Computer Skills: General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use database software, e-mail, internet software, spreadsheets, teaching software, and word processing software.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk; sit; use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee must often stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. The employee must be able to speak clearly to be understood by others and understand the speech of others-emotional stability to work effectively under pressure and control all aspects of the job.
