    General Definition of Work

    To provide information to the courts to assist with the bail decision and to provide supervision and services as ordered by a judicial officer to pretrial defendants.
    Essential Functions
    • Perform those duties required pursuant to § :3 of the Code of Virginia, as amended.
    • Employ approved interview techniques and assessment procedures necessary to determine the defendants appropriateness for consideration for pretrial release.
    • Review motor vehicle and criminal records, medical records, treatment reports and social histories to assess appropriate levels of supervision.
    • Interview and screen inmates in Roanoke City and Roanoke-County-Salem jail.
    • Apply approved risk assessment tools to determine levels of appropriate mental health, psychological, or substance abuse, and social competency intervention and services.
    • Supervise and monitor defendant progress completing required intervention and sanctions imposed by the court.
    • Complete required breath testing and urine screening. Determine probable substance abuse behavioral patterns.
    • Prepare and compose written reports to the court concerning the probationer's progress and adjustment to probation and testify in Court as may be necessary.
    • Maintain orderly files and case records.
    • Fully utilize state-approved and guided computerized programs (PTCC) to track and monitor offender progress.
    • Be effective in handling confrontational individuals.
    • Be effective in working with people individually and in group setting.
    • Such other duties as may be assigned by the Director.
    Qualification Requirements

    Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology, or related field is required.
    Knowledge of basic interview techniques.
    Knowledge of the personal and social dynamics of substance abuse.
    Knowledge and proficiency in the use of computer programs (Windows; Microsoft Word, Excel) and computer-based data entry modules.
    Minimum of two years' experience working in the criminal justice field. Prefer experience in pretrial services, but not required to apply.
    Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
    Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in office settings.

    Special Requirements

    Minimum of 2 years of case management or pretrial experience.
