    General Job Description: Under the direct supervision of the building principal, assistant principal, and classroom teacher, the primary responsibility of the special education nurse 1:1 shall be to assist the classroom teacher in meeting the educational, social, physical and emotional needs of an individual special education student.


    Qualifications:
    1. One to three years of experience in a pediatric medical environment preferred.
    2. Must hold a diploma or Associates Degree or Bachelors Degree from an accredited nursing program.
    3. Must hold a valid license from the Illinois Department of Professional Regulations as an Illinois Registered Nurse.
    4. Must be certified in CPR.
    5. Able to lift and carry an elementary aged child.
    6. Demonstrates the ability to maintain confidentiality regarding all aspects of work with staff and students.


    Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
    1. Coordinates and maintains individual medical assistance to an individual special education student.
    2.

    Assists the classroom teacher in working with an individual special education student to reinforce instructional material initially introduced by the teacher.

    3. Assists the individual student with personal hygiene needs as required and with feeding as required.
    4. If needed, regularly lifts up to a 50 lb.

    student in and out of a wheelchair or other ambulatory device so the student can fully participate in the educational programs at school.

    5.

    Dispenses medications as directed by the Illinois School Code and the District's policies and procedures and maintains security of controlled substances and medications.

    6.

    Provides and/or monitors treatment based on assessment of the student during periods of short-term and long-term rest and recovery, and communicates with parents and physicians of treatment progress, etc.

    7. Responsible for awareness of medication side effects and drug interactions.
    8. Supervises and performs necessary medical interventions to provide and promote student independence.
    9. Maintains universal precautions under the guidelines of OSHA.
    10. Develops, evaluates and updates individualized nursing interventions and goals for the student at risk.
    11. Communicates with parents, food service staff, teachers, etc. on the medical needs/issues of the student.
    12. Refers students to the appropriate medical provider.
    13. Assesses the medical needs of the student.
    14. Interfaces with all levels of school staff and with District staff and outside agencies.
    15. Accompanies the student to special area classes or to and from busses as needed.
    16. Attends District, school and/or team meetings, when necessary or appropriate.
    17. Assists the classroom teacher in maintaining a behavior plan for the individual student.
    18.

    Maintains or modifies a student's curriculum to the needs of the student as required and directed by the classroom teacher or IEP.

    19. Assists the individual student in any testing and observes and records the student's progress as needed.
    20. Assists the individual student in meeting their IEP and gives input into progress reports for the student.
    21.

    Communicates with adaptive PE, social worker, parents, vision specialist, occupational therapist, speech therapist and physical therapist or any other specialists to assure smooth transition of the student as needed.

    22. Maintains a daily student activity log as needed.
    23. Performs other related duties as may be necessary and assigned by the building principal, assistant principal and classroom teacher.

    Starting pay $39.41/hour
