    Reports To: Director of Nursing

    Supervises: Quality Assurance Nurse, Treatment Nurse, Rehab Staff, Licensed and Certified Nursing Staff.

    Job Summary: Works under the direction of the Director of Nursing and manages the day-to-day operations of the nursing department, including but not limited to staffing requirements, quality assurance and monitoring of resident care.

    Duties:

    • Assist in review, interpretation and implementation of facility, Administrative and nursing objectives, policies and procedures routinely.
    • Makes regular rounds daily in order to observe operations and make recommendations for corrections as needed. Ensure that resident's rights are maintained, as well as safety and infection control protocols are maintained.
    • Work in conjunction with quality assurance nurse reviewing and analyzing resident incident reports and initiating corrective action.
    • Communicate with residents and their families as needed.
    • Review potential C.N.A. applications, check registry and references, interview and hire C.N.A.s as needed. In facilities with C.N.A. supervisors, coordinate this activity accordingly. Ensure that background checks are completed upon hiring.
    • Prepare C.N.A. schedule, assessing staffing levels with regards to acuity and control of overtime. In facilities with C.N.A. supervisors, the A.D.O.N. will oversee and monitor process.
    • Maintain written job descriptions and performance evaluations for C.N.A. staff.
    • Schedule and announce C.N.A. meeting times, dates, places, etc. Meet with C.N.A. staff on a regular basis and solicit advice from other inter-departmental supervisors in identifying and correcting problem areas and /or improvement of services.
    • Counsel, discipline and terminate C.N.A. staff when necessary, coordinating and documenting such actions with the Director of Nursing and Administrator.
    • Supervise daily staffing requirements, reallocating staff as needed, ensuring compliance with duties.
    • Attend Medicare and Care Plan meetings.
    • Participate in the facility's Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement program, completing audits and reporting of results.
    • Serve on various committees in the facility and provide written/oral reports as assigned by the committee's guidelines or direction.
    • Assist Director of Nursing in obtaining information related to admission inquiries.
    • Work closely with the facility Psychiatrist regarding resident behaviors and psychotropic medications. Monitor and follow-up on all residents receiving psychotropic medications in accordance with OBRA guidelines. Ensure care plans address need for psychotropics appropriately and that all consent forms have been obtained and maintained in the resident's medical record. Instruct all nurses and provide continuing reinforcement of instruction on behavior monitoring, documentation, consent requirements, and notification of medication changes (increases and decreases).
    • Assist Director of Nursing in auditing admission/readmission charts on the first working day following admission. Assign and follow-up with appropriate staff regarding completion and/or correction of required information.
    • Randomly audit medication passes and C.N.A. skills at least quarterly, documenting results.
    • Participate in recapping of physician's orders monthly, as assigned by supervisor.
    • Assign monthly summaries and ensure their completion within allotted time frame.
    • Inventory IV supplies and, once approved by D.O.N., make sure items needed are ordered.
    • Participate in Dining Room audits as assigned.
    • Serve as the liaison to ancillary departments that affect resident care such as laundry, dietary and other therapeutic services.
    • Assumes duties of Director of Nursing in his/her absence.
    • Rotate after hours on-call duties as assigned.
    • May be required to work floor as a staff nurse in event of nursing shortage.
    • Perform all other work related duties as assigned by Director of Nursing.
