    Description

    Central service technicians, also called sterile processing technicians or central service (CS) professionals,#play a critical role in preventing infection by sterilizing, cleaning, processing, assembling, storing, and distributing medical supplies.

    # JOB SUMMARY:

    # Processes instruments, supplies, and trays for Surgery, Maternal Health, Emergency Room, X-Ray, ICU, and Nursing Units

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Minimum age of 18 years.

    Minimum of one year experience in patient care and/or central service in a hospital or related health care facility, or completion of a certification course in central service technology.

    Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Ability to function in stressful situations. Able to take weekend call on a rotating schedule.



    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    Must have strength and stamina for prolonged walking and standing. Demonstrates adequate vision, or correctable with glasses/contacts, to read and write.

    Able to hear, or correctable with hearing devices, and able to talk and converse with others in person and over the phone.

    Able to hear, see, and feel to accurately assess, monitor, and administer care. Able to frequently lift at least 60 lbs., reach, pull, push, bend, stoop, and kneel. Possesses fine motor skills and hand/eye coordination to give care (i.

    JOB RELATIONSHIPS

    • Reports to Central Sterile Supervisor , OR Manager, and Director of Surgical Services
    • Demonstrates a team approach by working cooperatively with other members of the health care team.
    • Responsible to Central Sterile Supervisor, OR Manager, and Director of Surgical Services.

    PRINCIPLE JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Complies with safety and emergency procedures.
    • Completes hospital/unit competency program.
    • Provides cooperative and courteous service to patients, visitors and co-workers.
    • Demonstrates effective and accurate verbal and written communication according to departmental guidelines.
    • Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for adherence to organizational and departmental standards and policies.
    • Participates in the hospital and department Performance Improvement Program.
    • Demonstrates the knowledge skill and judgement to perform his/her responsibilities.
    • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients on the unit (includes demonstration of knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span.
    • Maintains unit according to steps in the sanitation procedure.
    • Utilizes personal protective equipment when working in the decontamination room and follows safety precautions in use of sterilizers
    • Demonstrates competency in use of equipment, such as utensil washer, ultrasonic cleaner, and sterilizers.
    • Inspects each instrument critically after it is cleaned to verify that it is clean, free from imperfections, and moves freely to ensure proper function. Reports missing instruments from a set to Clinical Manager or OR Charge Nurse.
    • Sends instruments needing to be sharpened or repaired to OR Materiels Coordinator and replaces them in set or notifies OR Clinical Manager of the instrument temporarily out of set.
    • Maintains instruments in good condition by preventing rust, corrosion, spotting, and staining through following good cleaning and sterilization practices and trouble-shooting problems as soon as they occur.
    • Identifies all instruments are decontaminated and processed according to manufacturers guidelines and IASCHM Standards.
    • Inspects instruments trays or sets before sterilization to insure all instruments, accessories, and parts are in set and function properly.
    • Prepares instrument sets and packages are assembled and wrapped according to procedure; placing the appropriate chemical or biological indicator inside and outside the package.
    • Labels each package with name of article, name of person preparing package, and load number.
    • Demonstrates competency in operating sterilizers and understands material requirements for type of sterilization.
    • Places sterile supplies on appropriate exchange carts or other areas for dispatching and constantly monitors sterility while they remain in unit.
    • Prioritizes work assignments and accomplishes tasks in a timely manner with supervision.
    • Organizes work load and effectively completes each task in a thorough and neat manner by end of shift.
    • Demonstrates competency in knowledge and skills pertinent to a Central Sterile Technician
    • Seeks assistance as need arises.
    • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients on the unit (infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric), including demonstration of knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span.
    • Readily accepts assignments to other units as appropriate.
    • Demonstrates positive changes in behavior as a result of constructive suggestions.
    • Demonstrates a cooperative approach to unit maintenance, assisting other staff members, and accepting additional assignments.
    • Demonstrates desire to improve and update job knowledge by attending 4 hours of in-hospital education programs in addition to hospital mandatory requirements.
