    Family Court Supervisor: Assistant Public Defender

    The Albany County Public Defender is seeking a NYS barred attorney to serve as its Family Court Supervisor. The ideal candidate must have experience in supervising attorneys, be committed to indigent defense, and be proficient in New York State Family Court practice, specifically, providing legal representation for parents and caretakers who are accused of neglect or abuse under Article 10 of the Family Court Act.

    Schedule: Monday – Friday
    Hours: 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM
    Salary Range: $108,327.00

    Standard Responsibilities:

    • Supervise and support all Assistant Public Defenders, professional and support staff assigned to Albany County Family Court.
    • Appear in Family Court and Integrated Domestic Violence Court to represent Public Defender clients, and to mentor and supervise staff.
    • Collaborate with other Public Defender Supervisory staff to plan and manage Office policies, goals, and procedures.
    • Assign case files to staff on an equitable basis and assure family court office matters are handled.
    • Delegate court assignments and other duties to staff, monitor and manage staff workloads, ensure appropriate court coverage, and review requests for time off.

    Full Performance, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics:

    • Thorough knowledge of the Family Court Act and experience in litigation, legal principals, terminology and procedures;
    • Must possess a demonstrated commitment to criminal justice, family court matters, indigent defense, social justice issues and/or the Albany County communities;
    • Thorough knowledge of techniques involved in court presentation, investigation and prosecution of criminal proceedings;
    • High level of organizational and administrative skills required to handle a challenging caseload;
    • Ability to engage in purposeful dialogue with clients and others;
    • Ability to effectively negotiate with County Attorneys and CPS workers;
    • Ability to interact with CPS workers, other Defense Attorneys, Judges, and Probation officers
    • Ability to interface with community based treatment, educational, vocational, and other programs;
    • Excellent oral communication skills, ability to write persuasively, and strong computer skills.
    • Thorough knowledge in such areas as planning, organizing, coordinating, motivating and controlling the work force;
    • Ability to provide sound administrative direction and consultation to subordinates;


    Minimum Qualifications:

    Attorney with a New York State bar admission (or ability to waive into New York State from another jurisdiction), five (5) years of experience in the practice of family court law, and supervisory experience.
