    T heMontgomery County Sheriff's Officeis currently recruiting individuals who have prior experience as certified law enforcement officers in the State of Maryland, to fill open positions as sworn Deputy Sheriff at the rank of Deputy Sheriff I (DS1) .The Sheriff's Office Lateral Program will allow for equivalency of up to nine (9) years of qualified experience to be considered for compensation determinations upon hire. Lateral applicants who have successfully completed a Maryland Police Training and Standards Commission (MPTSC) Entry level Training Academy will not need to attend another entry level training academy program if they have had a valid MPTSC certification within the p ast(3) years. This recruitment will be used to fill positions beginning immediately.

    TheDeputy Sheriff Iposition will perform regulatory and law enforcement duties to protect the lives and property of Montgomery County residents. The position will work varying shifts to include split shifts, evenings and midnights and may be called upon to work weekends and holidays. Deputies must also be available for periodic overnight trips and can travel by air, when necessary, to return inmates to and from other states.

    The working environment is divided between field work (serving civil process papers, transporting prisoners and citizens, returning prisoners from out of County/State and maintaining custody of prisoners in a small detention setting) and time spent in a courtroom providing prisoner and courtroom security.

    Prior to becoming a sworn Deputy Sheriff, applicants must show that they are currently a certified Police Officer in good standing through the Maryland Police Training and Standards Commission or have been previously certified within the past three (3) years and separated from their previous law enforcement employment in good standing.

    To be considered for this position, applicants must satisfy the following requirements:

    • Currently a certified police officer through the Maryland Police Training and Standards Commission or a previously certified police officer in Maryland if it has been three (3) years or less since the applicant was certified as a police officer.
    • Must be twenty-one (21) years of age at the time of obtaining a sworn deputy sheriff status.
    • Completion of high school or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland.
    • Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class "C" (or equivalent) driver's license from the applicant's state of residence.
    • A United States citizen or be in compliance with COMAR regulation B
    Testing Information: Walk-in testing is allowed. Applicants are requested to arrive 20 minutes early.

    The written examination is scheduled for the following dates and times:
    • Saturday, January 6 at 10:00 a.m.
    • Wednesday, January 24 at 6:00 p.m.
    • Saturday, February 3 at 10:00 a.m.
    • Wednesday, February 14 at 6:00 p.m.
    • Saturday, March 2 at 10:00 a.m.
    • Wednesday, March 13 at 6:00 p.m.
    • Saturday, April 6 at 10:00 a.m.
    • Wednesday, April 24 at 6:00 p.m.
    • Saturday, May 11 at 10:00 a.m.
    • Wednesday, May 22 at 6:00 p.m.
    • Saturday, June 1 at 10:00 a.m.
    • Wednesday, June 26 at 6:00 p.m.
    Additional Information:
    • Candidates will be provided with information via email with instructions and information to schedule their own test date after applications have been reviewed and eligibility requirements are met.
    • Prior to appointment, candidates must successfully complete an oral interview, background investigation, polygraph, physical, psychological, drug and alcohol screening.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Experience: Satisfactory completion of the Maryland Police Training Commission prescribed course of Entry Level Training.

    Education : Completion of high school or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland.

    Equivalency :None.

    License : Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class "C" (or equivalent) driver's license from the applicant's state of residence.

    Other : A United States citizen and 21 years of age as of the first day of employment as a sworn Deputy Sheriff.

    Preferred Criteria

    There are no preferred criteria. All applicants who meet minimum qualifications confirmed by OHR will be scheduled for a written examination. Based on the results of the written examination, applications will be rated " Eligible -Well Qualified", "Qualified " or "Did Not Pass." The highest rated applicants will be placed on the Eligible List and may be considered for interview.
