    Scope of Responsibilities The Deputy Superintendent is a cabinet-level executive position, reporting directly to the Superintendent of Schools. This position provides administrative leadership; plans, organizes, directs, and supports assigned activities, under the direction of the Superintendent.

    Performance Responsibilities

  • Support and direct Administrative Directors in their supervisory roles with building Principals and with building needs.
  • Assist the Superintendent with Principal development and building leadership capacity within the organization.
  • Monitor school improvement and accountability efforts throughout the organization.
  • Support the Superintendent as front line of support to progress all systems and major initiatives within the organization.
  • Participate in required district Board and committee meetings and other activities deemed necessary.
  • Oversee the disciplinary program of the district.
  • Resolve parent, staff, or community concerns and complaints; manage the complaint resolution process.
  • Provide general administrative assistance to the Superintendent in the execution of school district initiatives.
  • Establish administrative regulations to comply with adopted school board policies; assist in the interpretation and execution of the policies and regulations.
  • Direct, plan, control, and monitor the performance of assigned department components in conformance with objectives, plans, schedules, and budgets; works directly with assigned administrators in charge of reporting departments in the execution of their specific responsibilities; account for variance and implement necessary corrective actions.
  • Supervise and evaluate work of all assigned staff; in conjunction with Human Resources, develop recommendations for staff which may involve staff development, placement, dismissal, or reassignment of personnel in conjunction with the appropriate district staff personnel.
  • Develop agendas and compile reports, information, and recommendations as assigned by the Superintendent.
  • Maintain liaison and on-going communications with district staff and community and school organizations.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law and administrative regulations.
  • Establish relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and community which reflect recognition of and respect for every individual.
  • Develop a proactive orientation to identify potential problems and take appropriate action.
  • Serve as project manager, organizer, and facilitate all projects assigned by the Superintendent.
  • Complete other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
  • Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Curriculum Instruction, Educational Leadership, or equivalent.
  • Must meet or be willing to meet the State school administrator's continuing education requirements.
  • Central Office Certification issued by the Michigan Department of Education or the willingness to acquire it.
  • Minimum of Seven (7) years of successful school based administrative experience, secondary preferred.
  • Knowledge of current education research and best practices.
  • Demonstrates skills in leadership, communications, and team building.
  • Successful experience in planning and directing district-wide programs as well as budget management and development.
  • Broad knowledge of an advanced and professionally specialized discipline or other studies not available to undergraduate schools, involving an advanced theoretical knowledge within a specified field.
  • Desirable Qualifications

  • Doctorate.
  • Five (5) years successful experience as a teacher.
  • Knowledge of and experience with staff and program evaluation.
  • Successful experience in a multicultural urban school district
  • Knowledge of KPS curriculum, instruction, and assessment programs
  • Experience administering programs in one or more of the following areas: elementary or secondary education, Title I, special education, Education for Employment, Education for the Arts, early childhood, fine arts, math, science, social studies or other specialized areas or functions.
