    :

    The Cytotechnologist is responsible for the screening and reporting of negative gynecological cytology cases, and identifying and referring abnormal cases to the pathologist. They are also responsible for the screening of non-gynecological specimens for the identification of abnormalities prior to the pathologist examination of the specimen. The cytotechnologist also maintains accurate quality control and quality assurance records.

    Major Responsibilities:

    1. Microscopically screen slides to assess adequacy and distinguish varying degrees of atypia, dysplasia and malig-nancy.

    2. Has working knowledge of the Bethesda System reporting system.

    3. Understands and complies with the requirements of all regulating agencies, including maintaining records of daily activities and number of hours and slides screened.

    4. Must participate in and demonstrate satisfactory performance in a proficiency testing program in gynecological cytopathology approved by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

    5. Assists with FNA procedures and carries out specimen preparation, adequacy evaluation and initial screening.

    6. Seeks opportunities for continuing education and the proper documentation of such activities.

    7. Uses EPIC to verify appointment information and other pertinent information required for patient care.

    8. Works independently exercising decision making skills as well as working as a member of a health care team 9. Performs other job-related responsibilities as requested.

    Education and Learning:

    REQUIRED

    Bachelor's degree in Cytotechnology from an accredited school of cytotechnology OR certified by a certification agency approved by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). A copy of the applicant's/employee's diploma and/or transcript as confirmation of the education requirement must be provided at time of hire.

    Category I - All Employees in this job title have a reasonably anticipated risk of occupational exposure to blood and/or other potentially infectious materials.
