    Job Description and Essential Functions

    Brief Description of Job Responsibilities:

    • Maintain and stock all rooms
    • Clean and maintain instruments
    • Order supplies
    • Prepare patients to see the ophthalmologist including patient education for procedures and surgery
    • Order and dispense contact lenses
    • Triage patient phone calls within scope of practice
    • Communicate with providers about patient calls received
    • Perform patient exams and diagnostic tests
    • Install eye drops
    • Prepare patients for minor in-office surgery and laser procedures
    • Call in prescription refills as directed
    • Assist in scheduling patients
    • Communicate with hospitals and other offices as directed by providers
    • Room patients
    • Assist with procedures

    Specialized Responsibilities:

    Performance Requirements:

    • Patient history taking
    • Triage of patient concerns and ability to schedule appropriately
    • Ability to perform lensometry and neutralize patients' glasses
    • Ability to perform diagnostic tests such as Visual Field, OCT, Topography, etc.
    • Ability to perform keratometry
    • Ability to perform basic tonometry
    • Ability to evaluate ocular motility
    • Ability to perform retinoscopy and obtain a manifest refraction
    • Ability to perform fundus photography
    • Ability to perform A-scan measurements
    • Ability to perform IOL calculations
    • Ability to prepare the lasers for physicians
    • Assist physicians with interoffice surgical procedures and lasers
    • Knowledge of ocular anatomy
    • Knowledge of systemic diseases and their impact on eyes
    • Knowledge of medical terminology
    • Knowledge of surgical procedures
    • Knowledge of clinical optics
    • Knowledge of ocular pharmacology
    • Knowledge of laser and surgical procedures
    • Knowledge of clinic and department policies and procedures related to infection prevention, disaster plans and safety processes
    • Knowledge of organizational policies, relations and procedures to administer patient care
    • Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care

    Education/Experience/Certifications:

    • High school diploma or equivalent
    • Graduation from an accredited program for ophthalmic assistant or technician preferred but not required
    • 3-5 years' experience as an Ophthalmic Technician in a clinical setting

    Non-Essential Duties:
    Other duties as assigned within scope of practice


    Typical Working Conditions:


    The typical working conditions are in a clinical office and laboratory environment dealing with multiple patients in a fast paced work environment.

    Occasional stress from workload and customer complaints. Possible exposure to communicable diseases common in a clinical healthcare setting.


    Typical Physical Demands:

    • Requires a full body range of motion to handle, lift, push, and pull patients
    • Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time
    • Occasionally lifts and carries items up to 50 lbs.
    • Push and pull patients in wheelchairs occasionally with up to 75 lbs. of force
    • Requires visual acuity correctable to 20/30, hearing within normal range and color perception
