    Job Description / Essential Elements:

    BANNING UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

    CUSTODIAN

    Position: Custodian
    Department: Maintenance
    Reports To: Site Administrator or designee
    Personnel Commission Approved Revisions: September 16, 2004

    DEFINITION: Under indirect supervision, performs activities related to keeping an assigned site clean, sanitary, safe and orderly; performs custodial duties in the upkeep of a facility; and performs related work as required.

    CHARACTERISTICS: Positions are under the direct supervision of the Facilities, Maintenance and Operations Supervisor and/or the site Principal. Incumbents are assigned complete responsibility for the cleaning of a school site to be kept at a high standard of cleanliness and safe operating condition so that full educational use can be made at all times. The duties listed below are typical for positions in the class collectively but on one position will necessarily include all these duties.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    *Confers with supervisor and/or principal regarding care and cleaning programs at the
    school site.
    *Requisitions custodial supplies and equipment and controls the use of these materials.
    *Assumes responsibility for keeping the physical site in a clean and presentable manner.
    *Sweeps, scrubs, dusts and cleans areas such as offices, hallways, workshops lavatories,
    classrooms, cafeterias, auditoriums, libraries, multipurpose rooms and stairways and
    building exteriors.
    *Does emergency clean-up resulting from breakage, vandalism, spilling or illness.
    *Operates buffers, vacuum cleaners and a variety of other custodial equipment.
    *Replaces light bulbs and performs minor repairs of general nature.
    *Assists in moving and arranging furniture, equipment and materials.
    *Refinishes, seals, waxes and polishes floors; vacuums and shampoos carpets.
    *Participates in District inservices, workshops and/or seminars.
    *Prepares site for daily operation; secures site at end of assigned shift.
    *Additional duties may be assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS
    Knowledge of: General building custodial maintenance.
    Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in cleaning various types of surfaces and furniture.
    Cleaning chemicals and their proper use.
    Safety practices related to cleaning methods.
    Basic English usage, writing and math.
    Ability to: Skillfully operate specialized cleaning and maintenance tools and equipment.
    Perform heavy physical labor.

    Work without immediate supervision.
    Read and comprehend labels.
    Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
    Maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
    Maintain a pleasant appearance and demeanor.
    Training and experience:
    Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
    Experience in cleaning and maintaining building areas; or any combination of training experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities.
    Good work history and attendance.
    Licenses: Valid California Drivers License.
    Personal Qualities:
    High degree of custodial aptitude and willingness to learn new skills, routines and equipment Possess physical strength and stamina to do strenuous work.
    Physical: Good physical condition as determined by pre and post-employment inquires and health reports. Must pass District physical examination which includes back and neck, elbows and wrists, knees, hips and ankles.
    Physical Demands: The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands and finger to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee frequently must squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and climbs on to ladders. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job.
    The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as cleaning supplies, pails and unloading trucks. Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move up to 90 lbs or more. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, bleachers, scrubbing, machines. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee may occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

    MUST PASS THE DISTRICT WRITTEN EXAM. Applicants that pass the initial screening will be
    notified of the examination date. The written exam will cover English language usage, school and
    student safety, first aid, student interaction, and human relations.

    This position is part of the California School Employees Association (CSEA) bargaining unit.

    After a conditional offer of employment, applicants must meet the following requirements:
    1. Must pass District drug/alcohol screening
    2. A current TB clearance
    3. Fingerprint clearance from the Dept. of Justice and the FBI
