    Job Summary

    Under the general direction of the Food Services Manager, follows menu plans to prepare balanced meals for the residents of the Youth Center. Monitors and assists residents that are helping with food preparation and kitchen clean-up activities.

    Primary Duties & Responsibilities

    1. Prepares a variety of meal items, which may including baked goods, meats, vegetable dishes, and others. Set up lighter meals, such as cereals, sandwich items, fruits and others.
    2. Completes food preparation tasks, such as paring vegetables, slicing meats, and making salads.
    3. Follows instructions in preparing special meals that conform with individual dietary requirements.
    4. Cleans kitchen and cooking utensils to maintain facility to health code standards.
    5. Oversees residents assigned to kitchen in food preparation and cleaning activities.
    6. Assists in the ordering and stocking of food.
    7. Follows established safety and security guidelines, regularly monitors equipment and utensil levels.
    8. Restocks pantries and other food storage areas.
    9. Performs other duties as assigned.
    Qualifications
    • The job requires knowledge normally acquired through the completion of a general high school education or equivalent.
    • One year on the job experience as a cook, preferable with experience in meal preparation for large groups. Food Handler's Certification preferred.
    • Experience working with youth preferred.
    • Mental ability to periodically handle pressures related to meeting deadlines, fulfilling scheduling requirements, etc. Work includes attention to detail.
    • Physical ability to occasionally transport items weighing up to fifty pounds. Incumbent is periodically required to stoop, bend or kneel to accommodate different working positions and is frequently required to walk and/or stand for extended periods of time.

    • Occasional outside working conditions with exposure to extreme hot or cold weather conditions.
    • Frequent exposure to noise, fumes and/or odors and occasional exposure to dust and/or dirt. Frequent contact with fire and occasional contact with chemicals.
    • Travel between County locations is occasionally required.
    • Extended work days (beyond eight hours/day) are frequently required.
    • On-call availability to handle work problems, attend meetings, handle emergencies/crisis situations, etc. at all hours is occasionally required.
