POSITION SUMMARY

The University of Providence invites applications for a Staff Accountant to support the daily financial operations of the University. Reporting to the Controller, this role performs a broad range of accounting functions including monthly close activities, journal entries, account reconciliations, financial analysis, and support for budget managers. The Staff Accountant helps ensure accurate financial reporting, compliance with accounting standards, and effective stewardship of University resources.

This position works collaboratively with campus departments, Providence St. Joseph Health partners, auditors, and vendors, and plays an important role in maintaining strong financial processes that support the University's mission. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, analytical, and committed to accuracy, service, and continuous improvement in a mission-driven higher education environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Review operating statements and prepare journal entries to facilitate timely and accurate financial statements.
  • Complete the monthly general ledger closing process by preparing accounting journal entries, analyzing accounts and accruals, and posting journal entries into the system.
  • Prepare and present monthly quantitative and qualitative analyses by deadlines, emphasizing variances from the budget, recent prior months, and year-to-date figures.
  • Reconcile assigned accounts monthly, including researching and preparing any correcting entries for approval and posting.
  • Prepare cash projections and perform other treasury functions.
  • Assist budget managers with questions related to their monthly financial management reports and other inquiries.
  • Provide guidance and support to team members, sharing knowledge and best practices to enhance departmental effectiveness and collaboration.
  • Maintain professional growth and development through continuing education, participation in trainings, professional associations, and other activities to stay current with technology and organizational practices.
  • Participate in unit/department performance improvement activities to develop and implement processes that support quality service and effective work performance.
  • Attend all mandatory staff meetings and training programs to ensure continued understanding of departmental policies, procedures, and performance improvement programs.
  • Maintain accounting records in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, University of Providence procedures, and financial policies, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and other regulatory agencies.
  • Maintain confidentiality of records, including those of students, employees, and faculty.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the philosophy, mission, core values, and goals of the University of Providence, integrating these values into appropriate programs and services.

    • EDUCATION:

  • This position requires a bachelor's degree in accounting, business or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    • EXPERIENCE:

    • Three years of detailed accounting experience (i.e. financial statements, closing an accounting period, detailed reconciliations)
    • experience in non-profit or higher education accounting preferred.
