    Description
    General Summary
    • The Registered Nurse is a professional caregiver who works with Anesthesia, physicians and other healthcare personnel, assisting with patient care before, during, and after procedure. The Registered nurse provides direct patient care to all patient populations. Is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluation of the nursing care given to patients undergoing Endoscopic procedures. The role is defined as the intra-operative period and will have contact with the patient in each phase of the experience. Communicates with gastroenterology, internal medicine, surgeons, and/or anesthesiology as needed about patient condition. Assists with maintaining equipment and inventory. Participates in performance improvement activities. Maintains regulatory agency requirements, nursing and hospital policies, procedures and standards.
    Essential Duties and Responsibilities
    • Ensures that the National Patient Safety Goals are maintained as set forth by The Joint Commission and other regulatory bodies.
      • Improve accuracy of patient identification.
      • Improve effectiveness of communication.
      • Improve safety of using medications.
      • Reduce risk for health care-associated infections.
      • Universal Protocol for Preventing Wrong Site, Wrong Procedure, and Wrong Person Surgery.
    • Reviews patient charts for completeness to meet current documentation standards and policies.
      • Pre-operative work up.
      • Allergies
      • Lab Work
      • Operative permit.
      • Current physician history and physical with diagnosis and plan and physician order for procedure.
    • Provides patient education based on identified patient learning and evaluates effectiveness. Provides patient with explanation and verbal reassurance consistently.
    • Identifies physical symptoms and changes and takes appropriate action in a timely manner.
    • Demonstrates knowledge and competency in providing moderate sedation to patients during procedures, reporting any physiological or psychological to the physician.
      • Monitors patient through constant assessment of vital signs every 5 minutes per policy.
      • Monitors patient reaction to sedation in regards to depth of sedation and patient responses.
      • Demonstrates knowledge of medication given in reference to amount, reaction, and reversal of medications.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of cardiac monitoring and can identify dysrhythmias.
    • Makes decisions reflecting knowledge of facts, knowledge of diseases/ conditions, care required and good judgment.
    • Carries out medical and surgical asepsis during treatments and special procedures.
    • Demonstrates awareness of patient and patient's family physiological, psychological, and physical needs promoting safety, comfort and security promoting dignity and respect.
    • Demonstrates ability to be flexible, organized and productive, self-starter, compatible and supportive; team player.
    • Assists with orientation of new staff members to the department.
    • Participates in quality assurance programs.
    • Participates in continuing education programs
    • Maintains open and positive communication with nursing personnel and other healthcare professionals.
    • Maintains a safe and clean environment for patients and staff by implementing and following infection control procedures according to hospital policy and SGNA guidelines.
    • Maintains Endoscopy instruments and accessories in working order and able to troubleshoot and recognize malfunctions.
    • Correctly tests instrumentation for optimal function.
    • Notifies supervisor of broken and/or malfunctioning instrumentation and removes from service.
    • Follows manufacturer's recommendations and SGNA guidelines for proper cleaning and disinfection of endoscopes and accessories.
    • Demonstrates proper cleaning and disinfection of endoscopes and accessories on annual competency.
    Job Qualifications
    • Education
      • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing
    • Work Experience
      • One year acute care experience preferred
    • Certification/License
      • Current RN license in the State of Missouri or Compact State.
        American Heart Association Basic Life Support
        American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
    Mental/Physical Requirements
    • Considerable mental concentration required. Lifting up to 35 lbs., turning activities and nearly constant walking required. Standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.
    Working Conditions
    • Frequent exposure to infectious disease and hostile persons at times. Frequent exposure to communicable disease via blood and other body fluids. Minimal physical discomfort.
