ACCOUNTABLE TO: Area Manager (PGL/Lead)

DIMENSIONS:

This is the intermediate level of production machinist. Incumbents are accountable for efficient workflow and for quality and quantity of finished parts, routine machine maintenance and tooling conservation. Incumbents are expected to become capable of operating and setting up machines within the work cell over time, as directed by the area manager.

SUMMARY STATEMENT:

Sets up and operates machine tools within the work cell. Loads materials into machines and operates machine tools to produce finished parts that conform to proper dimensions, inspecting work and performing basic setting/adjusting of the machine to maintain products within specified tolerances.

MAJOR AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

1. Changes settings or programs and tooling inserts in order to achieve the proper dimensions of finished parts, assisting basic machinists with more complex or more difficult set-ups.

1.1 Obtains the correct program to control machine operations for the part being run on a CNC machine and loads it into the machine control center.

1.2 Using hand tools and following specifications for the job, inserts and secures tooling in holders, returning used tooling to its correct location.

1.3 Adjusts cutting angles and speeds on manually operated machine tools and edits the programs on CNC machines as necessary to achieve desired results.

2. Operates one or more machine tools to produce high quality parts in an efficient manner.

2.1 Visually inspects materials and loads into equipment via chucks, fixtures etc.

2.2 Runs parts through the machine(s), watching and listening for unusual run characteristics that indicate malfunction.

2.3 Follows complete inspection protocol after the machine has completed its first operation to ensure that parts are within tolerances. Thereafter uses sampling to monitor variation in dimensions and the sequence and number of parts run on each set of tooling, changing tooling when it is worn to a point where change is indicated.

2.4 Moves finished parts to the next workstation or staging area.

3. Exhibits and performs basic personal computer functions in various software systems including but not limited to:

3.1 Entering inspection production approvals as required.

3.2 Entering accurate productivity/efficiency data as required.

3.3 Using the business operating system, to check work queues, inventory levels,

and other production related tasks.

3.4 Using the Horton "intranet" to access quality information, blueprints, safety

information, and other production related information.

4. Performs daily and weekly routine machine maintenance in a manner which conserves resources and keeps the machines as productive as possible.

4.1 Fills machines with coolant and monitors concentration levels during the shift.

4.2 Cleans all chips and excess coolant or lubricant from inside and outside the machine on a regular basis per the standard operating procedure.

4.3 Cleans the work area around each machine and all containers and racks where parts are stacked, in order to maintain a safe work area and in order to avoid contamination of parts or excess wear of moving parts.

4.4 Inspects jaws, fixturing and tooling to ensure quality and are machined safely.

5. Moves between machines in the cell as directed by area manager.

5.1 Sets up and operates machine tools within the work cell.

5.2 Cross trains between machines in the work cell to gain or maintain knowledge required to set up and operate machine tools in the work cell.

6. Provides training in work methods, procedures, and work instructions to employees and temporary workers.

7. Performs other duties as directed by area manager.

EQUIPMENT USED

Uses business software, computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine tools, which may include turning, milling, drilling, broaching machines, machining centers, common hand tools, air powered hand tools, precision measuring equipment, robots, balancer, hoist and material handling equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is inside in a typical machine shop environment. Work involves exposure to machine noise, moving machinery, and moving parts.

Requirements

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

A. Strength, agility, movement: Work includes frequent handling of parts. Work requires balancing when operating foot controls. Work includes frequent lifting, pushing and pulling of materials from pallets, baskets or racks. Occasionally requires crouching or stooping when cleaning around machines. Travel within the facility to move material is frequent. Work may include extended periods of standing.

B. Sensory ability: Good vision is required, particularly near vision for inspection of tooling and components and reading measuring devices. Field of vision needs to be sufficient to work safely around machinery. Depth perception and hand-eye coordination need to be sufficient to insert fresh tooling in holders and otherwise set up machines.

C. Communications: Communication with others is required.

D. Level of exertion: Work is medium, consisting of occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and frequent movement of up to 20 pounds.

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

A. Reading: The position requires the ability to read short instructions, blueprints, specification sheets and machine operation manuals.

B. Writing: Writing skills are required at a level consistent with recording production and inventory data.

C. Verbal Skills: Verbal communication needs to be at a level consistent with providing explanations on technical matters, such as when instructing others in the operation of a machine.

D. Mathematics Skills: Math ability needs to be at a level consistent with performing trigonometric or geometric operations.

E. Reasoning Ability: Reasoning ability needs to be at a level consistent with solving not readily apparent problems where symptoms may be vague and facts may be incomplete, requiring further inquiry but generally confined to related work areas. Solutions require interpretation of information and some independent judgment.

EMPLOYMENT SELECTION CRITERIA

A high school diploma, or equivalent (GED), is desired but not required. Requires 6 months of developed relevant work experience at Horton or elsewhere. A relevant 1- or 2-year technical degree / diploma in a machining related field fulfills the 6-month work experience requirement.

JOB SKILLS REQUIRED

Basic and intermediate blueprint reading, basic and intermediate business system, communicate and work well and efficiently with others, basic computer, basic and intermediate inspection and measurement, basic and intermediate machine operating, basic math, material handling, TS System overview, statistical process control.
