We are seeking an enthusiastic individual who is organized, detail oriented and possesses excellent customer service and communication skills.
Major Responsibilities:
- Reports to and assists the Utilities Department director in departmental organization, customer communication, developing policies, procedures and related issues.
- Communications lead for the Department including web site management, coordination with the Public Communications Department, and receiving and handling public complaints that come through the City Council, Mayor, and City Manager.
- Provides administrative support to Department Director and other staff, including writing letters to customers, and attendance at meetings, preparing documents and reports utilizing computer software.
- Assists with the development and implementation of departmental short and long-range strategic planning, goals and objectives.
- Serves as administrative lead for the Utility Review Board, a City-Council appointed which reviews applications for waivers of the requirement to connect to public utilities.
- Represents the City of Chesapeake on a variety of regional committees.
Typical tasks include:
- Resolving problems/issues and responding to customers in a timely manner.
- Compiling monthly, annual and special reports.
- Gathering and maintaining information/data to support periodic and special reports documenting activities and events.
- Coordinating with the Department head and other management team staff on operational issues/changes; providing guidance and direction to administrative and supervisory personnel regarding complex situations.
- Evaluating departmental policy and procedures; revising or developing new policies and procedures as required.
- Attending or conducting staff and other professional meetings to exchange information.

Required Qualifications
Vocational/Educational Requirement: Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in business administration, public administration, or a closely related field.
Experience: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of four years of full-time equivalent experience in administrative support and supervision.
Special Certifications and Licenses: Depending on position, may require a valid driver's license in compliance with City Driving Standards.
Special Requirements: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.
Preferred Qualifications
Diverse experience in customer service, public service, and utilities administration.
