    Examples of Duties


    Detention Services:

    • Supervises and monitors inmate activities and behavior to ensure a safe and controlled environment. Ensures inmates receive a level of persona and health care services that are consistent with that required by law.
    • Escorts/transports, monitors and supervise inmates to and from various locations; maintains order and control of inmates and visitors.
    • A Detention Center Deputy prepares inmates for court, work release, appointments, etc: escorts inmates to various locations. Also accompanies doctors, physician assistants, nurses and other professionals on treatment/medication rounds.
    • Perform duties in booking area, including performing strip searches.
    • Implement suicide prevention techniques by making frequent checks of inmate and notifying proper personnel if necessary.

    Classification, Evaluation and Services:

    • Determines initial custody classification and housing assignment for new offenders; monitors inmate behavior and makes classification changes if needed; ensures
    • The Deputy determines the offender's eligibility for special programs (trustee or community service).
    • Processes offender requests, provides information and investigates complaints as appropriate; interviews and counsels offenders.
    • Plans classroom schedules and appointments for inmates enrolled in educational or training programs; maintains classroom, prepares lesson plans, gathers materials and keeps records of class and equipment availability.
    • They distribute supplies to indigent offenders when requested.

    Intake/Processing:

    • Receive arrestee into custody, following appropriate procedure and relaying information to appropriate personnel.
    • Ensures accurate processing of court orders; directives or other judicial action.
    • Maintains accounting of inmate properties; receives and releases funds and / or personal property as required or requested.
    • Enters, processes and verifies information required of the various inmate management and information systems.
    • Monitors the operation of all facility security monitoring; communication, life safety and telephone equipment.
    • Checks printout and time served log daily and notifies appropriate staff of inmates to be released.
    • Verifies that inmate has been processed through the ID laboratory when appropriate to charges.
    • Processes the release of inmates through the intake area, and through the computer terminal, completing required paperwork.
    • Coordinates the exchange and transfer of data with court system and other agencies.
    • Ensure inmates are prepared for court and dressed appropriately
    • Takes fingerprints and photographs of arrestee/inmates and administers Alcohol Intoxicated (AI) Breathalyzer tests.

    Public Contact:

    • Performs inmate visitation duties following all required procedures.
    • Responds to and / or transfers incoming telephone calls appropriate.

    Reporting:

    • Maintains, prepares and submits all appropriate logs, reports, files and documentation relative to assigned area.
    • Updates inmate records through the computer terminal as data originates and verifies the accuracy of computer records.

    Inventory:

    • Inventories detainee's personal clothing and deposits in proper storage basket; releases property of inmate as required.
    • Maintains an amount of stock and supplies sufficient to meet needs and reorders supplies when necessary.
    • Issues clothes, shoes, linens, and identification arm band to inmate.

    Miscellaneous:

    • Trains new employees when assigned to the various functions of the Detention Center.
    • May be assigned to perform duties of higher or lower level classifications in this or related class series and / or perform duties on a temporary or acting basis.
    • Responsible for knowing and complying with all Kenton County and Detention Center safety rules.
    • Performs other related duties as required.

    Deputies performs work of moderate difficulty and responsibility involving the supervision of Kenton County Detention Center inmates thus being responsible for the security and control of adult offenders.

    Assignments could be in the area of custody, processing and control or other specialize program or unit. Reports to Shift Sergeant or other supervisory officers as indicated by the chain of command.

    Desirable Knowledge, Skill, & Abilities


    Good Knowledge of:

    • The principles, practices and security requirements involved in the operation of a detention facility.
    • Detention rules, regulations, procedures and applicable laws.
    • Practices, techniques and methods relative to area of assignment.
    • Restraining techniques and devices.
    • Audio/video monitoring system and electronic security control operations.

    Some Knowledge of:

    • The overall Kenton County Detention Center operation, the court systems and various support services.
    • Emergency plans and procedures.

    Skill in:

    • Self-defense and basic first aid.
    • Taking fingerprints and mug shots
    • The use of a personal computer and video programming equipment.

    Ability to:

    • Be alert, have good powers of observation and act quickly and calmly in emergency or dangerous situations.
    • Maintain control and order in the facility and while escorting inmates.
    • Prepares reports and maintain complete and accurate records.
    • Effectively deal with inmates, visitors, and others in often irate and stressful situations.
    • Learn the operation of various types of equipment and procedures associated with the position.
    • Learn and apply standard policies and procedures of the Kenton County Detention Center.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, the general public, courts, attorneys, and other related officials.
    • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
    • Effectively perform duties relative to area of assignment.
    Special & Physical Requirements


    • Must be a United States Citizen.
    • Must be at least 21 years of age.
    • Must not have been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor.
    • Completion of high school or GED.
    • Subject to shift work, extended duty hours, twenty-four call-back, holidan and weekend duty.
    • Subject to an extensive background check.
    • Subject to random drug and alcohol testing and polygraph examination during employment.
    • May be required to possess a valid driver's license.
    • Must be able to operate County Government equipment and vehicles in a safe, prudent and responsible manner
    • All positions require drug testing before employment and will require a pre-employment physical
    • Pursuant to the Drug Free Workplace Act of 1988, all employees must remain drug and alcohol free when reporting to work, while at work and while engaged in any work related activities.
    • Based on Federal Regulation 19-10 all positions in this classification are eligible for and will be offered hepatitis vaccinations. In addition, employees will be required to sign a statement stating they have accepted or declined the hepatitis vaccination.

    Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

    • Physical demands include standing, lifting, carrying, walking, bending and effectively dealing with inmate altercations.
    • Must have the strength and agility to allow the employee to perform job duties which would be found at the level of medium work (i.e. exerting 20-50 pounds of force) and including occasional very heavy work (i.e. exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force).
