    Job Responsibilities

    Obtain and maintain EPA certification as a Lead-Based Paint Risk Assessor.

    Direct and supervise regional staff (certified lead risk assessors) of the MCH/CHPS/Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program who conduct investigations and lead risk assessments in homes and other locations associated with elevated blood lead levels in children. Hold regular staff meetings with regional staff and completes Employee Performance and Management System documents and other administrative requirements in a timely manner.

    Audit summary reports and SCION entries for environmental assessments and provide feedback to regional Lead Risk Assessor staff to assure completeness, compliance with standard operating procedures and any applicable laws, policies, or program requirements.

    Assist with staff training.

    Coordinates and collaborates with the Office of General Council, regional public health nurses, and all Public Health staff involved in the prevention of childhood lead poisoning.

    Other duties as assigned, including participation in emergency response subject to on call or call back 24/7.

    Minimum and Additional Requirements

    Special Requirements

    Some positions require the possession of a valid driver's license. Some positions require the successful completion of specialized courses in health physics or certification as a health physicist.

    Minimum Requirements

    A high school diploma and experience in environmental health programs or radiological health. A bachelor's degree in the natural or physical sciences, mathematics, public health, engineering or a related technical field may be substituted for the required work experience.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Current certification as an EPA lead risk assessor is preferred. Experience with or thorough knowledge of the SC Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program is preferred.

    This position is part of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control's Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program/Bureau of Maternal and Child Health. The work performed supports DHEC's mission to improve the quality of life for all South Carolinians by protecting and promoting the health of the public and the environment. Effective July 1, 2024, this position will transfer to the South Carolina Department of Public Health created by Senate Bill 399 which provides for the creation of the Department of Public Health to assume the public health-related functions of DHEC.
