    Job Description


    The Assistant Director for Institutional Research position is part of the Institutional Research team in the office of Institutional Research & Planning (IR&P).

    IR&P provides information and services that enhance decision-making and strategic planning to advance Boston College's mission. IR&P comprises several teams that work together to provide a comprehensive integrated planning experience for University leaders.

    Situated within IR&P, Institutional Research serves as the official clearinghouse for information about Boston College and its constituents. IR coordinates external reporting, administers national and institutional surveys, and collects, interprets and analyzes data.

    The Assistant Director for Institutional Research assists the Director, Inst. Research, in supporting University operations and strategic planning initiatives through leading assessment, data collection and analysis, and compliance reporting.

    This role leads the production of standard internal data reports and collection/coordination of data in response to external data requests-e.g., IPEDS, Common data set; assists in assessment and data collection; responds to requests for information from college officers in consultation with the Director(s) and Vice President; works with Director and Vice President to identify data to inform decisions and support University operations; participates in appropriate professional organizations; and represents Boston College in institutional research and other higher education activities, meetings, and events.


    The Assistant Director has experience using statistical software (such as, SPSS and R), knowledge of data warehouse or business intelligence tools (such as, Cognos), project management; experience developing surveys and assessment tools, performing data analysis using statistical software, the ability to work with multiple data systems and large databases; the ability to work well with people from a variety of offices, and with a broad range of data; ability to direct the work of research analysts and graduate assistants; ability to work with highly confidential data; ability to work as a member of a team, and to work independently; ability to multitask and handle multiple projects simultaneously; and the ability to foster consensus regarding systems and reporting practices.

    The Assistant Director has strong planning and time-management skills, knowledge of data warehouses and report production, attention to detail and quality control, and experience in a higher education setting.


    Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

    • Leads state and federal compliance reporting (such as, IPEDS, Common Data Set), other external requests, and supports the NECHE accreditation.
    • Coordinates the development and administration of campus-wide and ad hoc surveys and focus group projects.
    • Leads quantitative and qualitative data analysis and reporting, and sharing findings with key stakeholders.
    • Collaborate on University cross-functional reporting projects.
    • Provide support to ensure accuracy and consistency on complex reports, including those in the Cognos, that can be used for external compliance reporting and decision-making analysis.
    • Collaborate with colleagues in IR&P and other University partners to establish and refine processes to ensure timely and accurate data collection, analysis, and reporting.
    • Maintain documentation and provide quality assurance testing for reporting and other projects.
    • Leads the Office of Institutional Research & Planning as appropriate, in campus-wide groups and discussions, and represents IR&P on various university-wide committees and projects, and in local, regional, and national affiliations.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Full-Time Equivalent Hiring Range:
    $76,950 to $96,200; salary commensurate with relevant experience.

    • Five years of progressively responsible professional experience at an institution of higher education, preferably in an institutional research, educational research, and/or assessment role. Preferably at least two years of experience supervising or managing institutional research and/or reporting functions.
    • Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred in a social science or education-related field with coursework in statistics, data science, and research methods preferred.
    • Broad understanding of higher education issues and the important role of research in supporting leaders to plan and make sound decisions.
    • Experience with compliance reporting, ideally reporting for state or federal requirements. Experience working with IPEDS and Common Data Set is preferred.
    • Demonstrated experience and skill preparing reports and presenting findings and recommendations clearly and diplomatically, and in a variety of formats
    • Experience and skill in gathering, editing, analyzing, and interpreting qualitative and quantitative data, performing advanced data analytics, and working with large, complex data sets.
    • Knowledge and experience working on designing assessments, survey research and methodology.
    • Excellent capabilities with software applications such as Excel, Microsoft Word, and PowerPoint to interpret and present information
    • Must have experience using SPSS and knowledge of R or other statistical software.
    • Significant experience managing complex projects
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to communicate technical information in oral, written, and graphic form to individuals with varying backgrounds.
    • Customer-service orientation; collaborative interpersonal skills; ability to get along with widely diverse personalities.
    • Ability to maintain a high degree of integrity while professionally handling confidential data.
    • Ability to work independently on several projects of varying scope simultaneously within basic guidelines and parameters and with minimal supervision.
    • Strong organizational skills and time management skills, diligent concern for accuracy and attention to detail, ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines, prioritize and follow through on projects, and adapt to changing situations, demands, priorities, and procedures.
