Job Description
NY State Assemblymember Grace Lee's District Office seeks a highly motivated, proactive,
and detail-oriented individual to serve as Chief of Staff.
Assemblymember Lee represents District 65, which encompasses much of Lower
Manhattan including the Financial District, Seaport, Chinatown Lower East Side, and some
of SoHo, Little Italy, and the East Village. Assemblymember Lee's agenda is focused on
community safety, affordable housing, environmental conservation, funding for public
schools, the expansion of supportive services, and providing excellent constituent services.
The Chief of Staff serves as the primary political and strategic advisor to the
Assemblymember, facilitates effective decision-making, and oversees all aspects of
day-to-day operations. The Chief of Staff is responsible for all office operations of both
the Albany and District Office including, but not limited to, hiring and supervising all
staff and interns, advising on and executing office strategy, maintaining the office
budget, overseeing the office's legislative work, scheduling, community engagement and
constituent services, and communications. The Chief of Staff supervises, directs, and
supports an interdisciplinary team that includes Communications, Legislative Affairs,
Community Affairs, Scheduling, and numerous interns.
The role will require the ability to manage multiple competing priorities and timelines,
problem-solve, monitor, and update both the Assemblymember and staff on projects and
office operations.
● Work with the Assemblymember and staff to develop and implement strategies to
advance legislative, policy, and community priorities
● Oversee all personnel matters, including recruiting hiring, training, managing,
and evaluating employees in the district and legislative offices. Assign and direct
work; supervise work product and track long-term projects to completion; ensure
effective internal communications and collegial work environment
● Drive a legislative agenda, develop advocacy strategies, and build and manage
coalitions. Research legislative, budgetary, and policy issues. Draft and advance
bills through the legislative process
● Facilitate effective collaboration with the offices of city, state, and federal officials
and the leadership and staff of the Assembly
● Interacting with government agencies, organizations, members of the community,
and other elected officials' offices
● Develop and maintain relationships with constituents and community leaders,
advocacy organizations, and other stakeholders. Responsible for tracking key
legislation in Albany and critical issues in the community
● Overall supervision of consistent services, legislation, and day-to-day operations
in the Albany office and local district offices
● Oversee communications for the office
● Help prepare the member for floor debate, prepare talking points, memorandum,
and other written documents, track the Member's legislation, and work closely
with advocates and other elected officials
● Regular travel to Albany during session and to other conferences as needed
Additional duties and responsibilities will be based on the individual's strengths and
interests. This position reports to the Assemblymember.
Qualifications
Ideal candidates will possess the following education, experience, language abilities, and
competencies:
● Bachelor's degree preferred, or Associate's degree with comparable job experience
● Two years of public service is strongly preferred, e.g., case management, community
organizing, electoral campaign, or nonprofit work experience
● Prior management experience and demonstrated ability to build and manage teams
effectively is strongly preferred
● Previous legislative experience is strongly preferred
● Previous experience working directly with principals is strongly preferred
● Strong organizational skills, including the ability to manage tasks on simultaneous
projects, prioritize, meet deadlines, and maintain consistent attention to details
● Ability to travel between NYC and Albany
● Proficient computer skills
● Excellent written and public speaking abilities
● Flexibility about work hours, available to work evenings and weekends on occasion
● Ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
● Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to speak before large groups
● Mandarin, Cantonese, or Spanish fluency, a plus
Benefits:
● Compensation is commensurate with experience: $60,000 - $75,000 per year.

This is a full-time, district, and Albany office-based position with an ideal start date of June
