The ideal candidate will have at least 8-10 years of progressive leadership experience, ideally within a nonprofit or public agency setting. Successful candidates for this position will have a proven track record of building and managing multiple initiatives or programs, personnel oversight, creative problem solving, contract/grant management and systems development.

    The Director of Programs is a crucial member of the leadership team, and will be integral in executing our Strategic Plan and organizational goals. This includes continuing the integration of basic materials needs into several wraparound social service programs in multiple counties throughout the region and state. The successful applicant will be prepared to plug into a fast-paced office environment composed of a small but mighty (and growing) team working to address the basic needs of hundreds of thousands of low-income children and families throughout California to foster pathways out of poverty.

    is currently offering staff a hybrid work schedule two days in the office (Mondays & Thursdays) and three days voluntarily worked from home (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays). As the needs of the organization continue to change, this schedule will be reevaluated. This does not include other in-person events and meetings with partners in the communities we serve.     Background

    (SBO) is at the forefront of integrating essential supply distribution seamlessly into wraparound services for communities in need. SBO operates statewide programs designed to strengthen and enhance social safety net initiatives and core programs. centralizes procurement and in-kind donations to provide upwards of $3 worth of necessities for every $1 invested. A few years before the Pandemic, the organization provided more than $60 million worth of materials including diapers, hygiene supplies, school supplies and other essentials to hundreds of thousands of low-income children and families throughout California. Our largest programmatic footprint remains in the Bay Area, but with significant growth in all 58 counties. Additionally, is strategically planning for expansive growth in several Bay Area and bordering counties

    By distributing materials through a statewide network of partnering agencies that provide additional resources supporting pathways out of poverty, we aim to both alleviate the immediate symptoms of poverty, while incentivizing families to participate in programs that provide pathways towards self-sufficiency. Leveraging existing investments into the safety net enables to distribute critical materials through an existing and trusted infrastructure with a leg up approach (no line), while minimizing our operational costs.

    Oakport Street Project -

    Our next phase will begin with the completion of the Oakport Street Project , which will include our new 120,000 sq. ft. distribution center, 160,000 sq. ft. nonprofit center, 24 hour childcare for employees, massive murals, a two-acre rooftop farm and reentry job training program with permanent placements.     Principle Duties and Responsibilities

    The Director of Programs manages and is responsible for the planning, budget, reporting and specific aspects of the business development for programs and related activities at The position includes managing the Programs Department staff members, working collaboratively with the Finance, Operations, and Special Projects Departments, and other responsibilities and tasks as specified below. The position includes substantial responsibility for the programmatic development and growth, the reputation and performance of the agency's programs, and the overall reputation of

    Position Specifics

    General Program Management

    • Planning, Budgeting and Oversight: Develop the annual program plan, including budgeting, outreach plans, timelines and milestones, and community needs assessments. Supervise the day-to-day implementation of all programs and measure program effectiveness through reporting, surveys and other methods.
    • Contract Management: Ensure timely and budget-compliant delivery of all current and new contract requirements with support from the operations and finance departments. This includes overseeing budgets, conducting needs assessments, creating collateral pieces, written reports and other necessary tasks.
    • Relationship Management: Cultivate and maintain relationships with key partners and stakeholders at the local, county, and state levels. Leverage these connections to advance current and future program goals. While our community partners are primarily not funders, we prioritize their needs as if they were our clients.
      1. Conflict Resolution: Address agency partners' concerns promptly and strive to exceed expectations whenever possible
      2. Outreach: Act as a liaison, independently and as part of a team, to key partners, prospective partners, and occasionally funders to build and foster relationships. Develop outreach plans for community partners and monitor direct reports' progress.
    • Department Staff Management: Manage program staff, creating and overseeing work plans, that adapt to changing needs, for all members. This includes and is not limited to outreach, accuracy, effectiveness, growth goals and coordination.
      1. Recruitment and Retention: Expand the department by recruiting skilled, mission-aligned personnel and fostering their development while holding them accountable to organizational objectives. Our organization is currently preparing for a growth period and is looking for a Director of Programs to build capacity within the department.
      2. Evaluation: Regularly assesses team performance, identifying areas of strength and growth.
      3. SOPs/Policies: Ensure all direct reports follow SOPs (current and as established) and correct actions when needed to ensure future accuracy. Identify efficiencies, recommend, and develop new procedures/policies where appropriate.
    • Agency Budget: Collaborate with the Operations and Finance Departments to draft the department budget. As a member of the leadership team, review and provide input on the agency's overall budget.
    Programs Development and Planning
    • Business Development Goals: Work with the leadership team and independently to grow key programs within the portfolio. Growth goals will be defined yearly, based on the organization's strategic plan, and the Director of Programs will be expected to meet or exceed those goals.
    • Existing Agreements: Maintain existing agreements. Utilize your direct reports with proper management/oversight wherever possible to focus on new partnerships.
    • Maintain the Programmatic Programs Dashboard: This will include details on past, current and potential new partnerships and programs to help guide our strategic growth.
    • New Initiatives: Management and ownership of pilot implementations and support of the Development Department/Leadership in new pilots/initiatives' seed funding.
    Key Qualifications
    • Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent; graduate degree in public policy, social work or a similar field preferred. Candidates with additional years of professional experience will also be considered.
    • Work Experience: Minimum of 8-10 years' experience with progressively increasing levels of responsibility, preferably for a human services organization with similar programmatic structures.
    • Management Experience: No less than 4 years' experience fully managing multiple direct reports. Five or more years preferred.
    • Written & Verbal Communication: Superior written and excellent oral communication skills; unwavering attention to detail and grammar in all external communications.
    • Grant/Contract Management Experience: No less than five years of experience managing contracts from multiple funders.
    • Understanding of Government Systems: Candidates should have a broad understanding of different government programs that provide wraparound services and other benefits to low-income children and families.
    • Computer Skills: Strong command of Microsoft Office Suite, Salesforce or similar CRM, Google Suite, Dropbox and/or similar systems.
    • Vision, Drive and Impact: Strong understanding of California state and local government agencies that assist low-income children and families.
    • Bilingual in either Spanish, Chinese (Mandarin and/or Cantonese), Tagalog, Vietnamese, Korean, Hindi, Persian/Iranian/Farsi, and/or Arabic a plus.
    • Great sense of humor and demonstrated dedication to the community.
    • Valid California driver's license, adequate insurance and the ability to drive to meetings and events throughout the Bay Area and on occasion other locations.
    • Travel outside of the Bay Area may be required to visit partners and potential partners throughout the state.
    Compensation

    The Director of Programs will be a full-time, exempt position with benefits commensurate with experience and performance. offers health, vision, and dental benefits, and a Simple IRA with a 3% gross company match. This position has a salary range of $100,000 - $115,000 dependent on qualifications and experience.
