- Acute Care 3200 is a 24-bed medical-surgical telemetry unit that cares for a wide variety of medical and post-op patients to include short stay patients. Although we are a women's hospital, we care for both women and men in a compassionate, supportive, high-tech environment, utilizing protocols to enable both patient and staff safety. Our post-op patients may be recovering from orthopedic, vascular, urological, gynecological, or bariatric surgeries. Due to the wide variety of services, we offer and medical conditions we see, 3200 is a great fit for graduate nurses and nurses seeking to build broad knowledge and/or gain new experience.
- Acute Care 5300 is a 28-bed medical-surgical unit that cares for a wide variety of medical and post-op patients and serves as Magee's stepdown unit. We see an extremely diverse patient population, with ages ranging from Many patients receive insulin and/or Cardezim drips, and all the unit's 28 beds are housed in private rooms, each hardwired for telemetry monitoring. Our post-op patients may be recovering from orthopedic, vascular, urological, gynecological, or bariatric surgeries; we also frequently receive overflow surgical patients who do not have beds available on their specialty unit. Due to the wide variety of services, we offer and medical conditions we see, 5300 is a great fit for graduate nurses and nurses seeking to build broad knowledge and/or gain new experience.
- Acute Care Resource provides ad hoc staffing solutions for special needs or disruptions in the hospital's workforce, such as in the case of vacancies, call-offs, and surges in patient census. Resource staff float to all areas of the hospital (including Med-Surg, ICU, PACU, and Emergency Department); Resource staff also opens and staffs overflow units during high census, so a high level of autonomy and self-direction is required. To work in the Resource Pool, you must be especially flexible, knowledgeable, and responsive Typically, 2-3 years of inpatient nursing experience or prior work in a resource/float position is preferred; Nurses receive a 10% differential in their hourly rate for floating.
- The patients care needs exceed the licensed practical nursing scope of practice.
- The patients care needs surpass the LPN's knowledge, skill, or ability.
- The patient's condition deteriorates or there is a significant change in condition, the patient is not responding to therapy, the patient becomes unstable, or the patient needs immediate assistance.

The LPN is prepared to function as a member of the health-care team by exercising sound nursing judgment based on preparation, knowledge, experience in nursing and competency.
The LPN participates in the planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care using focused assessment in settings where nursing takes place.
An LPN shall obtain instruction and supervision if implementing new or unfamiliar nursing practices or procedures.An LPN shall follow the written, established policies and procedures of UPMC, UPMC LPN Practice Guidelines and the State Practice Act.
