    Essential Duties

    Assists with and may coordinate site visits audits, consultations, inspections) of university areas that utilize lasers, radioactive materials or radiation-producing equipment to ensure compliance with federal, state, local regulations, codes, and university requirements. Uses a checklist as assigned to identify problems associated with the handling of lasers, radioactive materials and radiation-producing equipment. May conduct measurements with supplied equipment and training, and provides the data for required reports for tracking, decision-making and/or to satisfy compliance requirements. Works with the department to communicate to customers on radiation and laser safety related matters. Provides data to support compliance activities and to ensure radiation and laser safety programs are implemented and assists with implementing changes. May perform routine and frequent labor-intensive tasks. Assists with on- and off-site handling, storage, packaging transport and/or disposal of radioactive materials. May handle radioactive materials and use specialized equipment for radiation detection. May assist in maintaining inventory and storage of radioactive materials and lasers. Assists project teams with special studies to recommend solutions or alternatives. Assists with developing training and workshop for staff in the use of data processing and management tools. Maintains department databases keeping information current using various information systems or user specific software. May assist with routine office functions including: answering phones and transferring calls, organizing data/files and filing documents, ordering supplies and maintaining inventories. May assist with processing training records and inspection results and creating and updating documents to comply with ASU brand and marketing standards. Works as a member of project team supporting the development or facilitation of high impact training materials and participates in logistics, planning, and communication. Completes onsite data collection checklists for sample analysis and equipment readings. Calibrates and maintains monitoring equipment as assigned. May serve as a member of department emergency response team and participates in emergency drills and actual emergencies.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Associate degree in a science or technical field directly related to the position and two years related experience; or High School diploma with a minimum of 4 years science or technical experience; Or, any equivalent combination of experience or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

    Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working with radioactive materials.
  • Experience with radiation-producing equipment, including x-rays for medical and non-medical use.
  • Experience collecting and analyzing radiation samples.
  • Experience with Class IIIB and IV laser systems.
  • Experience with particle accelerators.
  • Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse 75 percent; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work 10 percent.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds 15 percent.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include or are subject to resolution of conflicts. Working in laboratories, shops, waste facilities and other hazardous locations.
  • Works in indoor and outdoor environments that may include extreme weather conditions; hot in summer and cold in winter.
  • Participates in respiratory protection program; assists with respiratory fit testing and training.
  • Participates in ASU medical surveillance programs, which may include dosimetry and vaccinations.
  • Equipment used: Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to computer workstation or laptop.
  • Use of a keyboard, monitor, mouse, printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone and associated technology peripherals. Driving an ASU vehicle with a valid AZ Drivers License Required to operate box truck and other heavy machinery after training Operates trucks, pumps, vacuum equipment, oil boom, generators, etc.
