    Position Title

    Community Volunteer Ambassador
    Stewards Individual Placements provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources.

    The Community Volunteer Ambassador (CVA) Program combines the strength of a national leader in conservation service with the National Park Service to train a diverse group of emerging leaders to assist park units in building lasting connections to communities.

    For the year, the Community Ambassador Program at the Outer Banks Group aims to keep volunteer hours constant with 2022 levels, and, hopefully, may even create opportunities to further increase VIP hours.

    To achieve this, the Outer Bank Group aims to implement a new adopt-a-beach program, expand digital volunteer opportunities, and continue to network with the local community.


    Site Description:


    The Outer Banks Group of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, and Wright Brothers National Memorial protects, studies, and shares many natural and cultural resources, from the first English attempts to colonize North America, to the first powered flight, to over 70 miles of pristine beaches.

    The Outer Banks Group's volunteer program is robust, and 2022 had the largest contribution of volunteer work to date, with an increase of 21% of volunteer hours from the previous year.


    Position Responsibilities:
    Primary Duties
    Actively participate in a safe workplace culture.
    Provide both park-specific and general information to the public.
    Talk to large groups of visitors.
    Answer numerous and repetitive questions about the park in a professional manner.
    Educate visitors on the regulations of the park and safety concerns.
    Use telephone to provide information about the park.
    Distribute maps, brochures, and other printed materials.
    Monitor and report safety concerns to the appropriate staff member.
    Other Possible Duties

    May occasionally conduct informal interpretative talks or presentations.
    May be requested to assist in emergency medical responses within scope of training.
    Ability to work independently with little to no supervision and as part of a team.
    Ability to research and effectively communicate facts about the resources of the Outer Banks Group.
    Skilled in oral communication and tactful discussion of controversial subject matter.
    Ability to maintain a positive attitude and consistently be courteous and polite to visitors.
    Enjoy talking with and meeting people.
    Ability to learn quickly and retain basic knowledge.
    Ability to follow written and oral directions, ask clarifying questions to ensure understanding of expectations.
    Ability to effectively deal with stressful situations.
    Participate in the CVA National Early Service Training in early November 2023
    Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident
    Be 18-30 years old at time of service (veterans up to 35 years old)
    High School Diploma/GED
    Pass fingerprint-based FBI, state criminal, and a national sex offender checks.
    Be able to provide proof of a driver's license and complete a MVR check

    Must be over 21 years old or have had license for at least 3 years to be insured in this position.

    Preferred Qualifications:


    A bachelor's degree in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.

    Specialized experience in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park-related work.

    Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to, the following:

    Park guide or tour leader; law enforcement or investigative work; Archeological or historical preservation research work; Forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; Management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations.

    Additional Information:

    The volunteer will be provided with a shared, multi-bedroom, fully furnished house. The park housing unit may be shared with up to two other interns or seasonal staff. The intern will have their own bedroom with a key-lock for privacy.

    The applicant will have the opportunity to work at three different National Park Service sites and collaborate with multiple divisions and park partners.

    The Outer Banks is a popular vacation area, with beaches, historic sites, restaurants, and many opportunities for outdoor recreation.

    Week-long in-person training at NPS site with travel/meal expenses covered.
