    Reports to the Executive Director, Surgical Services and works in collaboration with the Cardiothoracic Surgeon group.

    Operates extracorporeal circulation equipment and provides perfusion services during cardiac and cardiovascular surgery, intra-aortic balloon pump services, autotransfusion services and other related patient care.

    Performs direct patient care by:

    • Performing assessment and interpretation of patient's pre-operative status using patient history, laboratory analysis and catheterization report.
    • Conducting extracorporeal circulation involving specialized instrumentation and/or advanced life support techniques and ensuring the safe management of physiologic functions by monitoring the necessary variables. (Final medical responsibility for extracorporeal circulation rests with the surgeon-in-charge.)
    • During cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), administering blood products, anesthetic agents or drugs through the extracorporeal circuit on prescription; maintaining responsibility for the induction of hypothermia and other duties, when prescribed.
    • Providing consultation to the physician in the assessment, assembly and management of cardiopulmonary bypass and autotransfusion hardware and software and related technologies.
    • Providing assessment, selection and management of laboratory analyzers and software.
    • Providing assessment and interpretation of laboratory quality control.
    • Performing assessment and interpretation of patient's medical status on CPB using, but not limited to laboratory analysis, hemodynamics, fluid balance, oxygen transfer and heat transfer.
    Supports Perfusion Services and Cardiovascular Surgery management team by:


    • Assisting in ensuring that perfusion supplies and equipment are available to provide efficient and effective patient procedures and services, assuring periodic maintenance of same and initiating repairs or replacements as authorized. Participating in the evaluation of new perfusion products or equipment.
    • Improving quality by offering suggestions, taking action to meet customer needs, serving on quality project teams as assigned, implementing quality improvements and assuring own work achieves quality standards.
    • Adhering to safety standards, policies and procedures. Being responsible for the continuous improvement of work place safety by reporting unsafe conditions and suggesting safety improvements. Reporting unsafe working conditions through supervisor as appropriate.
    • Assisting in the preparation of various written reports, studies, etc. for administrative and regulatory purposes.
    • Participating in the teaching of students and new team members.
    • Keeping current in the field through professional development.
    Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:


    • Completing other job-related assignments and special projects as directed.

    • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
    • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
    • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
    • Complies with established organization and department policies.
    • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

    Education and Experience


    • The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of an approved program in perfusion technology from an accredited college, certification as a Clinical Perfusionist by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion or similar accrediting agency or certification-eligible and sufficient clinical experience in perfusion to demonstrate competence in the field.
    Knowledge & Skills


    • Requires an in-depth knowledge of anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, chemistry, physics and sterile techniques.
    • Requires an in-depth knowledge of the functions, uses and theory behind extracorporeal circulation equipment and auto transfusion devices used in cardiac and cardiovascular surgery.
    • Requires analytical skills to assess patient's condition and assist in planning and organizing the operation of perfusion services.
    • Demonstrates interpersonal skills necessary to establish and maintain effective relationships with patients, families, staff members and physicians.
    • Demonstrates excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, in order to report appropriate information needed by other health team members.
    Working Conditions


    • Works in a patient care environment requiring physical exertion, frequent changes in job demands, and certain undesirable patient care activities.
    • May be exposed to bio-hazards.
    Physical Demands


    • Requires ability to operate highly technical equipment and manual dexterity and visual acuity to observe and care for patients.
    • Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e. to walk/stand for prolonged periods of time, push carts/wheelchairs up to 50 pounds, to position/lift patients at a maximum of 35 pounds unassisted, over 35 pounds requires assistance, provide CPR, etc.) to perform the essential functions of the position.
