- Review construction documents (drawings, specifications, and other supporting documentation) for conformance with applicable codes, rules, regulations, and standards;
- Review changes submitted for previously approved projects for conformance with applicable codes, rules, regulations, and standards;
- Provide technical assistance to school districts, architects, and engineers working on public school projects;
- Respond to correspondence from a wide range of individuals, including parents, citizens, school administrators, consultants, and legislators;
- Perform research, as necessary, to resolve code related issues;
- Perform special assignments, as required, such as reviewing and drafting responses for legislative initiatives, drafting newsletter articles for the field, and drafting regulations;

This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).
For the duration of the
NY HELPSProgram, this title maybe filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.
In May 2024, if a temporary
NY HELPSemployee is satisfactorily performing in the position, the appointment will be changed from temporary pending Civil Service Commission Action to permanent non-competitive and the official probationary period will begin.
At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under
NY HELPSwill have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination.
Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State.
While serving permanently in a
NY HELPStitle, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.

Duties Description The New York State Education Department's (NYSED) Office of Education Policy is seeking candidates for a Professional Engineer 1 (Mechanical) position in the Office of Facilities and Planning.
This Office is primarily responsible for code enforcement, life safety, fire safety and health in all public K-12 schools and BOCES in the State, exclusive of New York City.
The incumbent of this position will be responsible for the review and approval of engineering construction documents for capital construction undertaken by public school districts and BOCES that require the approval of the Commissioner of Education.
