Job Summary:

Position Summary
Campus Recreation at the University of Wisconsin–Superior offers an internship each semester during the academic year. This program is intended for students completing an undergraduate degree in recreation, sport management, or a related field. This 2-7 credit internship that reports to the Associate Director of Campus Recreation.

The intern will gain hands-on leadership, operational, and supervisory experience in several program areas, including:

  • Intramural Sports

  • Special Events

  • Sport Clubs

  • Fitness Centers

  • Group Exercise

  • Facilities Management

  • Budgeting & Finance

  • Marketing & Promotion

General Duties and Responsibilities

Communication

  • Develop and maintain employee manuals and training guides for student staff.

  • Assist in maintaining effective communication systems with members and staff.

  • Provide clear instruction regarding policies, procedures, and equipment requirements.

Program Development, Implementation & Evaluation

  • Assist with the development, implementation, and evaluation of facilities and program operations.

  • Identify new activities and initiatives to enhance participation and engagement.

  • Support daily oversight of facility operations and open recreation.

Collaboration

  • Serve on departmental or campus committees as assigned.

  • Work collaboratively with staff across Campus Recreation and other campus partners.

Teamwork & Staff Engagement

  • Attend and participate in full-staff meetings, student staff meetings, and leadership team meetings.

  • Support a positive student employment experience.

Leadership

  • Provide on-site leadership and support to student employees and professional staff.

  • Participate in professional development opportunities, workshops, and conferences (e.g., WIRSA, NIRSA).

 

Creativity & Marketing

  • Assist in developing and implementing marketing strategies and promotional materials to increase program awareness.

Group Facilitation

  • Provide on-site supervision and coordination of special events and facility reservations.

Assessment & Evaluation

  • Assist in assessing participant satisfaction, usage trends, and student employee learning outcomes.

  • Prepare end-of-semester reports with recommendations for improvement.

Supervision

  • Assist with recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, supervising, and evaluating student staff members.

Organizational & Administrative Tasks

  • Assist in maintaining databases, inventories, and staff documentation.

  • Support payroll processes and staff scheduling.

Budgeting

  • Assist in budget development, including personnel costs, equipment purchasing, and marketing.

Research

  • Conduct benchmarking, surveys, focus groups, and other research to inform program and policy improvements.

Problem Solving & Critical Thinking

  • Support staff and program operations through troubleshooting, decision-making, and event coordination.

Other Duties

  • Assist in other departmental projects and responsibilities as assigned.

Specific Responsibilities (UW–Superior Intern Experience)

  • Spend time learning and supporting facility operations, including the Marcovich Wellness Center, Wessman Arena, and Superior Choice Credit Union Stadium  

  • Assist with fitness center operations and taking inventory of equipment

  • Assist with the promotion of events taking place in the department

  • Supervise intramural sports for 3-5 evening shifts during the semester.

  • Assist with student staff hiring processes, including promoting positions, interviewing, and onboarding.

  • Assist with red-shirt reviews and staff accountability measures.

  • Work 2-4 shifts at the Climbing Wall and become belay certified

  • Attend an Superior Adventures trip (if applicable)

  • Assist with event set-ups and learn the operations behind external events planning

  • Plan and execute a major project or program (proposal → approval → marketing → execution → evaluation → final report).

  • Complete professional development activities such as attending WIRSA, NIRSA webinars, or networking events (if applicable)

  • Coordinate meetings or visits with campus partners such as Housing, Dean of Students Office, Student Centers, and other student engagement units.

Benefit:

  • Wage: $14/hour
