    ABOUT THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY:

    The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) is the second largest municipal health system in the nation.


    DHS operates as an integrated health system, operating 25 health centers and four acute care hospitals, in addition to providing health care to youth in the juvenile justice system and inmates in the LA County jails.


    Across the network of DHS' directly operated clinical sites and through partnerships with community-based clinics, DHS cares for about 600,000 unique patients each year, employs over 23,000 staff, and has an annual operating budget of 6.9 billion.

    Drew University of Medicine and Sciences (CDU), DHS hospitals are training sites for physicians completing their Graduate Medical Education in nearly every medical specialty and subspecialty.


    In addition, to its direct clinical services, DHS also runs the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency and the County's 911 emergency response system, as well as Housing for Health and the Office of Diversion and Re-entry, each with a critical role in connecting vulnerable populations, including those released from correctional and institutional settings, to supportive housing.


    MISSION:

    To advance the health of our patients and our communities by providing extraordinary care.


    DEFINITION:


    Develops, organizes, and conducts formal and informal occupational therapy education courses and clinical training programs for students, interns, graduates, occupational therapists, and assistants.

    Provides in-service training for occupational therapy staff, physicians, nurses, allied health personnel and community agencies. Conducts training and evaluates its effectiveness in achieving educational objectives.

    Plans and develops teaching methods, reference materials and teaching aids for patient education, in-service, on-going and affiliate education programs, seminars and workshops taking into consideration specific education objectives and educational programs.


    Participates with allied health supervisory personnel in identifying and coordinating in-service and on-going education requirements for occupational therapy, medical, nursing, teaching and other allied health personnel.


    Conducts formal and informal instruction and demonstration sessions in support of general and specialized occupational therapy educational programs, including preparation of lesson plans and selection of appropriate materials and teaching aids.


    Consults and collaborates with outside agencies on recent treatment advances and occupational therapy issues; Based upon findings, plans, develops, and recommends training programs for clinical training, orientation and seminars to meet patient needs and optimize service delivery.

    Counsels and guides students and preceptors in attaining maximum student learning.

    Participates with occupational therapy supervisory personnel in planning and implementing evaluation criteria to measure the effectiveness of education and treatment programs.


    Analyzes existing education programs and recommends changes in goals, objectives and standards based upon inputs from the therapy staff and affiliated schools.


    Participates with the education coordinator or therapy chief and educational staff in defining educational goals, objectives, and standards for student programs, in-service education and on-going education.


    Reviews textbooks, films, professional literature and other resource materials and selects and maintains appropriate resources in support of occupational therapy and educational programs; Participates in clinical outcomes by conducting, reviewing, and assisting in research projects.


    Analyzes affiliated school curricula and plans clinical training programs to meet specific educational objectives and to supplement and reinforce academic requirements of affiliated schools.

    Plans and schedules occupational therapy clinical field work experience assignments for students.

    Meets with affiliated school representatives to review academic course content and make recommendations for changes in curricula to coincide with clinical training experiences


    SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:


    TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:


    Graduation from an occupational therapy curriculum* accredited by the American Occupational Therapy Associates Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) -AND- Three (3) years of experience in the practice of occupational therapy, one (1) year of which must have been in a supervisory
    or teaching capacity.


    LICENSE:

    A current license issued by the California Board of Occupational Therapy as an Occupational Therapist.

    A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

    Physical Class III

    – Moderate:

    This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.


    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

    Additional credit will be given to applicants who possess the following desirable qualifications:

    Additional years of experience providing professional occupational therapy services in a supervisory or teaching capacity beyond the Selection Requirements.

    A post-professional degree* in occupational therapy from an accredited college or university -OR- a master's degree* or higher from an accredited college or university in Education, Health Administration, Health Management, or Public Health.

    Provides effective instruction and assessment during clinical practice trainings in classroom, lab, or medical facilities by guiding and monitoring care provided by a group of students, conducting lectures and practical assignments, and evaluating student performance.

    • County employees who wish to meet the requirements using outofclass experience will be considered for this examination. Those claiming outofclass experience should describe their outofclass duties in detail in the Work Experience and Supplemental Questions sections of their application. Applicants are also encouraged to submit any supporting documentation such as out of class/additional responsibility bonuses, verification of experience documents, and performance evaluations in order to assist staff's review of applicants' qualifications.

    EXAMINATION CONTENT:


    This examination will consist of an evaluation of experience and education based upon application information, desirable qualifications and supplemental questionnaire, weighted 100%.


    CANDIDATES MUST ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70%
    ORHIGHER ON THE EXAMINATION IN ORDER TO BE ADDED TO THE ELIGIBLE REGISTER.


    ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:

    The names of candidates receiving a passing grade on the examination will be placed on the eligible register and will appear in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of eligibility.

    No person may compete in this examination more than once every twelve (12) months.
