    The Principal shall perform the duties of Principal as provided in Chapter 71 of the General Laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

    The Principal shall be the educational leader of the School and shall supervise the operation and management of the School and the School property, subject to the supervision and direction of the Superintendent.

    The Principal reports directly to the Superintendent-Director and is responsible for the total educational leadership of the high school and will provide the administrative direction and professional leadership necessary to develop and administer effectively the educational and career programs of the school.

    Administration of Instruction and Curriculum:

    • Pursuant to M.G.L. c. 71 § 59B, the Principal acknowledges the responsibility, in consultation with professional
    staff of the building, to promote participatory decision making among all professional staff for the purpose of developing educational

    policy.


    • Establish an operational design for curriculum improvement through maintaining continuing evaluation of existing programs using
    data to inform curriculum development.


    • Strengthen the instructional leadership of the schools by building the capacity of Instructional Coordinators, Academy Supervisors,
    Lead Teachers and teachers through ongoing planning and implementation of professional development.


    • Lead the restructuring efforts; recommend and implement program changes to promote, achieve, and follow through on NEASC
    recommendations and accreditation requirements.


    • Encourage staff involvement in district and school-based professional development, including essential training for licensure and r
    recertification of all staff.


    • Coordinate work of special subject areas and the Instructional Leadership Team...
    • Provide leadership for programs that facilitate the development of all students, including models for inclusion, ELL programs, 504
    accommodations and alternative options for secondary students.


    • Develop the rationale and data required for individualized student programs.
    • Oversee all required testing and assessment at G.L.T.S. such as M.E.P.A., N.O.C.T.I., M.C.A.S., etc...
    • Review and approve budget requests for educational materials.
    • Provide leadership to promote the mission of the high school, recommending changes as necessary to the School Committee
    through the Superintendent-Director.


    • Working knowledge of computer applications for scheduling purposes and experience with budget preparation utilizing
    spreadsheet software.


    • Promote the integration of technology into teaching and learning.
    • Leads data initiatives utilizing current DESE data and the DESE Data Warehouse.

    Supervisory Responsibilities:

    • Oversee the recruitment and hiring of personnel for the high school staff and assist in the evaluation of high school administrative
    personnel and Lead Teachers.


    • Provide leadership for the Administrative Team at GLTS.
    • Promote good inter-professional relationships among all professionals and staff.
    • Recommend and assist in developing sound personnel policies and practices consistent with maintaining morale and order.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    General Management:

    • Organize and direct the operation of the instructional program in conformance with established School Committee policies with a
    strong emphasis on improving achievement, and maintaining a safe and nurturing, age-appropriate, learning environment.

    2 Implement School Committee policies and regulations dealing with the high school within the spirit of true professionalism,

    recognizing each level of responsibility.


    • The Principal shall be responsible, and consistent with School Committee personnel policies and budgetary
    restrictions and, further, subject to the approval of the Superintendent, for the hiring of all teachers, instructional or

    paraprofessionals and other personnel to be assigned to the School and, further, for terminating all such personnel subject to the

    review and prior approval of the Superintendent and, further, subject to the applicable provisions of M.G.L. c. 71.


    • Have extensive knowledge of all state laws relating to education, particularly those dealing with licensure of teachers and schools,
    student rights and responsibilities, and administration of programs.


    • Assume overall responsibility for student discipline within the school and emergency response planning.
    • Assume overall responsibility for all data processing services and school communication between parents and the member
    communities.


    • Be responsible for assisting in the development of the high school budget, and all funds in student activity accounts.
    • Prepare the School Improvement Plan and any DESE or NEASC-required reports for the high school.
    • Carry out any and all duties as may be deemed necessary by the Superintendent-Director.

    Personal Development:

    • Engage in personal programs of professional improvement and growth through pursuit of formal educational programs.
    • Maintain professional memberships in state and national education associations.
    • Participate as an active member of the Leadership Team.
    • Maintain current licensure as a Technical High School Principal.

    Community Participation:

    • Maintain an active role in school and community organizations.
    • Establish specific programs and procedures for the dissemination of information to the community and to encourage the community.

    Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
    Candidate must possess a valid Massachusetts license through DESE as a High School Principal 9-14.


    Education and/or Experience:


    A master's degree and a minimum of five years of administrative or leadership experience in public education, preferably at the high school level is the minimum requirement.

    Prior experience as a High School Principal is preferred.


    Other Skills and Abilities:


    The Principal must demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in education to schools, teaching and learning; leadership experience and general knowledge of issues and problems in all areas of technical high school education.

    Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community; ability to effectively communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form.

    Must possess the flexibility and clarity to be a team player and a decision-maker when necessary, understanding of educational programming and curriculum for diverse learners.

    Must have a grasp of the curriculum frameworks, accommodations for student success, and strategies for the academic challenge of all learners; understanding of research and best practices to effectively promote reading and writing across the curriculum.

    The incumbent must be highly motivated and possess the ability to commit extensive hours to a demanding job; and ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and School Committee policies.

    Bi-lingual language skills preferred.
