Epic Cogito Business Intelligence & Analytics Manager – Job Description

Position Summary

The Epic Cogito Business Intelligence & Analytics Manager is responsible for leading the development, governance, and optimization of reporting, analytics, and data warehousing capabilities across the Epic Cogito platform. This role oversees the BI and analytics team responsible for Clarity, Caboodle, Reporting Workbench, Radar dashboards, SlicerDicer, and enterprise data warehouse solutions.

The Manager works closely with clinical, operational, financial, and executive leadership to ensure the organization has timely, accurate, and actionable data needed for decision‑making, regulatory reporting, and strategic initiatives. This leader plays a key role in establishing data governance standards, prioritizing analytics requests, and advancing the organization's data maturity.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Management

• Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Epic BI Developers, Clarity/Caboodle Analysts, and Reporting Analysts.
• Manage workload prioritization, project assignments, and performance evaluations.
• Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement within the analytics team.
• Guide team members through Epic certification pathways and ongoing professional development.

Strategic Planning & Governance

• Develop and execute the organization's Epic analytics strategy aligned with operational and executive priorities.
• Co‑lead or actively participate in analytics governance committees, ensuring appropriate prioritization of reporting and data requests.
• Establish and maintain data governance standards for data definitions, metric consistency, documentation, and security.
• Partner with IT leadership, executives, and operational stakeholders on data‑driven initiatives.

Analytics & BI Oversight

• Oversee the design, development, and maintenance of reporting solutions across Cogito tools:
  • Reporting Workbench
  • Radar & Dashboards
  • SlicerDicer (self‑service analytics)
  • Clarity (SQL‑based reporting)
  • Caboodle (enterprise data warehouse models)
  • Data extracts & ETL workflows
• Ensure analytics outputs meet organizational and regulatory standards.
• Support enterprise KPIs, quality initiatives, performance improvement, and benchmarking efforts.

Data Management & Quality

• Oversee data validation processes to ensure accuracy, consistency, and integrity across reports and dashboards.
• Ensure proper documentation, including data dictionaries, metric definitions, and data lineage.
• Collaborate with Epic application teams to identify workflow issues impacting data quality.

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

• Serve as a liaison between BI/analytics teams and operational, clinical, and financial leaders.
• Gather requirements, translate business needs into technical specifications, and guide solution design.
• Communicate analytics deliverables, timelines, risks, and impacts to leadership.
• Promote adoption of analytics tools, including self‑service reporting (SlicerDicer) across the organization.

Project Management & Implementation

• Lead analytics components of Epic upgrades, new module implementations, and data warehouse enhancements.
• Oversee testing and validation for Clarity/Caboodle updates, ETL changes, and report modernization projects.
• Manage vendor relationships as needed, including Epic Cogito support and external data vendors.

Qualifications

Required

• Bachelor's degree in information technology, analytics, computer science, healthcare, business, or related field (or equivalent experience).
• 5+ years of experience in healthcare analytics, BI development, data engineering, or Epic reporting.
• 2+ years of leadership, supervisory, or project/team management experience.
• Strong SQL skills and understanding of relational database structures.
• Strong communication, leadership, and stakeholder‑management skills.

Preferred

• Epic Cogito‑related certifications such as:
  • Cogito Fundamentals
  • Clarity Data Model (module‑specific)
  • Caboodle Data Model
  • SlicerDicer Administration
• Experience with BI tools (Power BI, Tableau, Qlik, Crystal Reports, etc.).
• Knowledge of data governance, data architecture, and analytics best practices.
• Experience managing reporting for clinical, operational, and financial domains.
• Familiarity with healthcare regulatory reporting (CMS, Joint Commission, quality measures).
