    Job Title:Production Underwriter - Senior

    Department:Commercial Lines Underwriting

    Reports To:Commercial Lines Manager

    FLSA Status:Exempt

    SUMMARY

    Duties are those performed at the top non-supervisory level of the Commercial Lines production underwriter class.

    Facilitates, accepts, rejects and modifies the underwriting of more complex/high-valued Commercial Lines risks. Serves as a resource to other departments within the Company as well as to agency representatives. Recommends Commercial Lines risk improvements, as necessary. Assists the Commercial Lines manager and/or the assistant manager with Commercial Lines workflow and projects, as assigned.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Within an assigned territory, accepts, rejects, and modifies complex/high-valued Commercial Lines new business risks.
    • Responsible for profit-oriented risk selection and pricing decisions within designated authority on complex/high-valued multi-line risks.
    • Monitors aggregate quality and pricing of book of business alignment.
    • Markets company products and services to assigned agencies.
    • Participate in developing action plans for achieving individual agency objectives.
    • Develops ongoing relationships with agents, monitors agency growth, profitability, and quality of submissions, and keeps agents up to date with underwriting and/or product changes.
    • Checks information received concerning risks, inspection reports, and agents advises.
    • Serves as a consultant to production, rating and claims adjusting personnel, as required.
    • Maintains frequent visit schedule with all assigned agents.
    • Develops new Commercial Lines business development strategies for new territories and Agencies.
    • Assists in the coordination of major book of Commercial Lines business initiatives including, but not limited to, line of business or agency re-underwrites.
    • Communicates with marketing representatives, agency personnel, other insurance or inspection companies, or other entities as may be necessary, to obtain further information, quote rates, or explain Company Commercial Lines underwriting policies, using available resources including, but not limited to, the PC network/Company computer system, the telephone, the facsimile machine, and e-mail.
    • Provides Commercial Lines underwriting guidance and expertise to Commercial Lines Lead Underwriters on major complicated Commercial Lines underwriting decisions including those involving large values and seeks Management approval, as necessary.
    • Performs the above-described job duties by examining such Commercial Lines documents as application forms, inspection reports, insurance maps, claims' files, and medical reports to determine degree of risk from such factors as applicant financial standing, age, occupation, accident experience, and value and condition of property.
    • Applies extensive Commercial Lines product knowledge including, but not limited to, Company Commercial Lines underwriting guidelines and policy forms, Insurance Services Office's manuals and forms as well as knowledge of and familiarity with rating processes for all Company Commercial Lines product offerings.
    • Monitors Commercial Lines Claims Reports to Underwriting (CRU), collaborating with Casualty and Property Claims Departments and Underwriting Management, on decision-making. Includes collaborating with Commercial Lines underwriters to create action plans to resolve issues noted in CRU reporting.
    • Reviews and researches Commercial Lines coverage issues, as directed.
    • Collaborates with Commercial Lines Manager to research and prepare various Policyholder and Regulator complaint and compliance responses.
    • Serves as a representative on various MMG operational committees, as directed.
    • Assists in planning and implementation of various Commercial Lines department training activities, as directed.
    • Assists Underwriting Management with the preparation of Commercial Lines underwriting file audits.
    • Develops and maintains positive Company/Agency relations which includes agency travel and visitation, and attendance at various conventions/meetings. (May include overnight stays.)
    • Travels as required to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the employee's position and to fulfill educational requirements. (May include overnight stays.)
    • Other duties may be assigned.

    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

    Bachelor's degree and 6-8 years of related experience and or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    LANGUAGE SKILLS

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

    Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume.

    Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

    COMPUTER SKILLS

    To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Office Productivity software such as Spreadsheet, Word Processing, Communications software, and Underwriting-related software.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

    The Company may expect the employee to acquire, within a reasonable period of time as established by the Company, the Chartered Property/Casualty Underwriter designation, sponsored by the American Institute for Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters; or the Certificate in General Insurance (INS Series); and/or the Associate in Underwriting (AU) designation; and/or the Associate in Personal Insurance (API), sponsored by the Insurance Institute of America.

    The Company may expect the employee to take other courses it deems appropriate to the employee's job duties.

    Possesses a valid driver's license.
