    Dorm Counselor/Social Worker

    This is not a State of Michigan position; it is a Michigan School for the Deaf contracted position.

    DESCRIPTION:
    The part-time Counselor/Social Worker will support student needs on an individual and/or group basis, depending on need for 8-15 hours per week between the hours of 4p-10p. The Counselor/Social Worker will support diversity, equity, and inclusion by providing information and resources, creating an atmosphere of student belonging, and providing opportunities for student leadership. The Counselor/Social Worker will consult and collaborate effectively with parents/guardians, teachers, and administrators, regarding student needs and opportunities, as necessary. The Counselor/Social Worker will supplement the work of the School Social Worker to support student needs and the needs of the building administrator.
    BASIC FUNCTION:
    1. Provide responsive services designed to meet students' immediate needs and concerns, including but not limited to counseling in individual or small-group settings or crisis response.
    2. Conduct individual and group counseling sessions to meet student needs and to benefit students socially and academically.
    3. Support diversity, equity, and inclusion and provide opportunities for student leadership.
    4. Participate as a member of the crisis prevention and intervention team and case management teams, as necessary.
    5. Collaborate with the School Social Worker to research and provide special services programs, classes, or presentations by outside presenters to students and parents i.e., alcohol and drug prevention, anti-bullying, parenting in a digital world, etc.
    6. Observe and evaluate student performance, classroom behavior, social development, and physical health, when needed.
    7. Participate in all staff professional development and any other professional development opportunities needed to enhance the school counseling program, as needed.
    8. Model self-discipline and ethical behavior and present self in a professional manner through appropriate dress, communication techniques, and demeanor.
    9. Perform other related duties as assigned by Dorm Supervisor or designee.
    QUALIFICATIONS:
    1. Hold a Master's degree, AND
    2. Possess either a Michigan Teaching Certificate with a Guidance Counselor (NT) Endorsement OR a School Guidance Counselor License issued by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) OR
    3. Be a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Limited Counselor License (LCL), Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor (CCMHC), OR
    4. Meet requirements for licensure as a bachelor's level Social Worker, a master's level Social Worker, or Social Services Technician
    5. Trained in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention or other crisis intervention approach(es) is preferred but training will be provided, where necessary.
    6. Possess exceptional organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills, and a strong desire to promote student success.
    7. Demonstrate a strong commitment to equity, social justice, and inclusion in all practices and position responsibilities.
    8. Demonstrate mental/physical ability and stamina for meeting the requirements of the position.
    9. Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform assigned duties, including lifting fifty (50) pounds on an occasional basis and in excess of fifty (50) pounds with assistance.
    10. Be self-directed and take initiative to meet the diverse demands of the position.
    11. Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, and others using American Sign Language and written English.
    • Knowledge of agencies providing mental health resources, services, and/or supports for students who are Deaf and hard of hearing and their families.
    • Skill in preparing and maintaining reports and records.
    WORK ENVIRONMENT:
    Michigan School for the Deaf is a bilingual, bicultural school operated by the Michigan Department of Education. All students enrolled are Deaf and hard of hearing. The primary mode of communication is American sign language with written communication in English.

    Work is performed in an office, school or community environment and involves continuous contact with staff, representatives of resident school districts, outside agencies, and members of the public.
