    Job Summary:

    The Providence Center Psychiatric Nurse Specialty in LGBTQ+ will assess and provide prescribed treatment for psychiatrically disabled individuals, working as part of a team. The focus of this position will be on the LGBTQ+ population with special attention to the Hispanic/Latin X and other underserved populations. Specific population will include adults with serious mental illness (SMI), adults who have co-occurring mental illness and physical health conditions such as chronic disease, individuals with substance use disorder, and individuals with co-occurring disorders.

    Duties and Responsibilities: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

    Address the unique needs of individuals and co-occurring disorders (e.g., substance abuse, developmental and/or physical disabilities, personality disorders, trauma, brain injury, etc.) that consumers have.

    Perform psychiatric nursing in accordance with appropriate medical protocol.

    Provide accurate and timely information about medications and their side effects to the client and relevant others.

    Use medication maintenance strategies, determining that the doctor's orders have been accurately transcribed, implementing appropriately the prescribed medical regimen, monitoring lab results to validate medication compliance and assessing any aspect of the consumer's treatment regimen that endangers the level of wellness, communicating questionable aspects of consumer care to appropriate persons.

    Use physical assessment skills to determine related nursing interventions, including when medication exacerbates medical conditions and recognition of basic medical problems.

    Inform and educate consumers about mental illness, medication, coping skills, their rights as clients, services, community resources, self-help and the consumer movement.

    Utilize best practices of intervention and support strategies.

    Teaches both simple and complex skills, including physical, social, cognitive emotional, and other relevant skills.

    Incorporate consumer choice in treatment.

    Make period reassessments and if warranted, change treatment plans.

    Demonstrate appropriate use of range of crisis prevention and intervention strategies, including crisis prevention and intervention, risk assessment, hospital alternative, hospitalization, and assessment of self care, performing calmly and professionally during crisis or emergency situations.

    Coordinate activities regarding consumer hospitalization, serving as liaison wit the hospital regarding admission, case review, and discharge.

    Comply with written clinical procedures and professional standards.

    Demonstrate current knowledge of issues and characteristics related to mental illness and its treatments.

    Integrate societal, cultural, racial, gender, and other issues related to mental illness and its treatments.

    Keep current about new developments in psychotropic medication and other biological interventions.

    Design, deliver, and document highly individualized services and supports.

    Encourage and facilitate personal growth and development toward recovery and wellness.

    Integrate personal choices into treatment plans.

    Effectively access and integrate community resources and natural supports into service planning and delivery.

    Treat consumers with dignity and competence, engaging them as fully collaborators in service planning, delivery, and evaluation.

    Utilize consumer's ability and strengths.

    Include family members and caring others in all aspects of service planning, delivery, and evaluation.

    Assess the impact of mental illness on family relationships and dynamics that can place family members at psychological and physical risk.

    Demonstrate knowledge of legal issues and civil rights.

    Comply with commitment laws and procedures (inpatient and outpatient commitment, disability, and relevant patient rights), and the duty to warn.

    Comply with client rights to informed consent for research and treatment.

    Comply with client rights to treatment, to refuse treatment, to privacy, to proper care and to treatment in the least restrictive manner.

    Work collaboratively within and across the service systems.

    Demonstrate knowledge of TPC and its place with in the mental health system, including TPC mission, goals, and policies.

    Communicate information efficiently and accurately to appropriate individuals.

    Perform duties in accordance with departmental goals, objectives and standards and contribute to their formation and evaluation.

    Attend and participate in team meetings.

    Coordinate consumer care activities with case management staff.

    Conduct activities in a professional and ethical manner.

    Provide treatment in compliance with TPC Code of Ethics.

    Follow ethical guidelines including informed consent, confidentiality, reporting of child and elder abuse, duty to warn, dual relationships, etc.

    Comply with TPC/ODH polices and relevant accreditation requirements.

    Identify and utilize available learning opportunities, including supervision, in-service training activities, professional and field related literature, conferences, and integrates new learning into daily work activities.

    Adhere to TPC/ODH infection control policies.

    Conduct activities in a culturally competent manner.

    Use language and a communication style that is understandable to the consumer.

    Integrate culturally relevant information into assessment and treatment records.

    Develop treatment plans and records that include culturally relevant issues that impact treatment responsiveness.

    Use evaluation and feedback to improve job performance.

    Systematically evaluate own work.

    Obtain and use collegial, consumer and family feedback.

    Accept and use direction and supervision.

    Benefit from constructive criticism.

    Perform recordkeeping in accordance with Health Information Services (HIS) and other TPC/ODH requirements.

    Complete daily activity logs.

    Complete initial assessment forms.

    Complete progress notes with appropriate format.

    Develop and implement a clear, specific, behaviorally oriented treatment plan with ongoing consumer and team input and with consumer signature.

    Complete insurance documentation as required.

    Complete required reports and evaluations.

    Follow required office procedures in a cooperative manner.

    Initiate and process incident reports as per Center guidelines.

    Adhere to Infection Control protocols.

    Maintain cooperative relationships with consumers, staff and the public.

    Communicate with various local agencies and other departments or teams at The Providence Center.

    Work in cooperation with co-workers and supervisory staff.

    Deal with team members regarding problems in a constructive manner.

    Attend trainings, case presentations and conferences.

    Provide feedback to staff on the content of educational programs attended.

    Participate in the education of other Center health professionals.

    Attend mandatory in-service trainings.

    Serve on appropriate Center committees.

    Requirements:

    Graduate of Nursing School or College. Bachelor's degree preferred.

    Rhode Island Registered Nurse (RN) license.

    Experience working with psychiatrically disabled patients, familiarity with the LGBTQ+ population with a focus on Hispanic/Latin X and other underserved populations.

    Valid driver's license and insured auto required.

    Knowledge and experience with psychotropic medication, and ability to work well with professionals from other disciplines in a team approach.
