    Description
    The primary purpose of this position is to lead and implement the strategic development and execution of organizational goals and objectives for the Fine Arts product in North America. Provide leadership, direction and support to underwriting team(s) and/or direct reports. Is responsible for underwriting, profitability, growth and retention of new and renewal business that is consistent with underwriting strategies. Manage underwriting functions to achieve profit, revenue, loss ratio, and expense targets. Ensure effective execution of best practices. In conjunction with PLL Leadership delegate underwriting authority to staff via letters of authority; monitor and revise as appropriate. Ensure a quality underwriting work product is produced consistent with letters of authority, underwriting strategy, standards and process. Provide coaching and training for underwriting staff based on results of underwriting audit review. Work with Operations to ensure all processing and service standards are met. Communicate, identified agency production, training or quality issues to Marketing. Develop and maintain relationships with internal resources (Actuarial, Product Development, Claim, IT, etc.) to coordinate services to customers.

    About the team:

    The Marine Division is based in London but has some limited representation in other key business locations. We accept risks in the areas of Hull, Cargo, War, Specie, Liability and Terrorism on a world-wide basis. We are leaders in several of our chosen areas and require a commitment to technical expertise and accuracy to maintain this leadership role. A great emphasis is placed on the relationship between the insured and insurer with a focus on meeting clients and producers in their home territories. Business is written through both Markel Syndicate 3000 and Markel International Insurance Company Limited.

    What we ask of you:
    • Work with Director of Marine to develop our US Fine Art Specie expansion plan.
    • Drive strategy, growth, and innovation in our US Fine Art Specie plan by accelerating market share in existing lines, expanding wholesale business, increasing underwriter footprint to capture major premium hubs, explore digital portal options, and explore risk management services.
    • Validate opportunity attractiveness to enter Jewellers Block and Cash in Transit.
    • Enhance Markel's reputation in North America to become a market-leading Fine Art Specie insurer.
    • Hire, train, mentor, develop, and manage US Fine Art Specie underwriters as assigned.
    • Maintain specific underwriting policies and procedures and collaborate with management, claims, CAT management, actuarial and product development to institute changes when appropriate.
    • Prepare, coordinate, and execute product line specific training for underwriters and support staff.
    • Act as advocate for Markel and the Fine Art Specie product line and communicate regularly with underwriters with authority.
    • Promote collaboration with US underwriting teams to advance line of business profit and growth goals.
    • Domestic and international travel when appropriate.
    What you will bring to the role:

    The successful candidate will have:
    • Extensive experience of Fine Art Specie underwriting.
    • Significant experience in leading a team including hiring, training, team building, mentoring and performance management of a commercial insurance underwriting team.
    • Demonstrated expertise in delivering superior underwriting results in prior organisations.
    • Broad understanding of US claims, actuarial, product development, regulatory and compliance functions.
    • An understanding of and enjoy working in a highly matrixed environment.
    • The ability to deliver exceptional written and verbal presentations, pro-active self-starter skills, a strong sense of urgency, flexibility and spontaneity.
    • Proven ability in setting and meeting objectives and impacting and influencing peers and subordinates to "buy in".
    • Demonstrated and technical knowledge and skills reflective of progression of increasing responsibility that includes mentoring and management of both underwriters and support staff.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and skilled presentation aptitude.
    • Knowledge of MS Office and underwriting systems.
    • Strong analytical, organizational, and time management skills.
    The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job-relevant education, job-relevant experience, training, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The base salary range for the Head of Fine Arts position is $175k - $225k/year with a 55% bonus potential.
