    Position Summary

    Student Health Services offers primary medical care and health promotion to students of San Diego State University through a wide range of programs and services. Care is provided by board certified physicians, certified nurse practitioners and other medical staff including nurses, clinical laboratory scientists, x-ray technologists, medical assistants, and pharmacists. In addition to the basic medical care, Student Health Services offers health education, orthopedics, osteopathic manipulative treatment and psychiatry.

    The mission of SDSU Student Health Services is to provide high-quality, convenient, student-focused medical care in a safe and welcoming environment, actively partnering with our student- patients to help them achieve and maintain healthy lives in support of their personal and academic success.

    This position, under the direct supervision of the SHS Medical Director, will be responsible for the provision of efficient, cost-effective medical care to SDSU student-patients. The Physician­ Specialty Services Psychiatrist is a licensed, highly skilled health care practitioner who provides a wide range of primary health care services within a student health center including assessment and management. The incumbent may receive work direction from a Lead Physician and will work collaboratively with the Lead Physician, other Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, and other staff consisting of Registered Nurses, Licensed Vocational Nurses, Medical Assistants, and Clinical Assistants.

    Under supervision of the Medical Director, Physician - Specialty Services Psychiatrists are assigned to perform specialized clinical services within the scope of practice of a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) license in the State of California, and board certification
  • in an American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) specialty or subspecialty as appropriate to the assigned duties. Examples of specialty services include, but are not limited to orthopedics, sports medicine, dermatology and psychiatry.

    The incumbent will provide psychiatric services to students of San Diego State University (SDSU) upon referral from providers at Student Health Services (SHS), Counseling & Psychological Services (C&PS) and Student Ability and Success Center (SASC). These services positively impact and support student well-being and academic success.

    Physician - Specialty Services Psychiatrists work as a team with other Student Health Center staff and may be assigned responsibility for the clinical supervision of the delivery of health care by other health care professionals and practitioners such as Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Registered Nurses or others engaged in the care of student-patients.

    This position has two schedule options:

    Schedule A: 32 hours per week (.75 time-base with a set schedule)

    Schedule B: 40 hours per week (1.0 time-base)

    This is a benefits eligible, temporary position anticipated to end on or before June 30, 2023 with the possibility of reappointment. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

    Education and Experience

    Graduation from a medical school and completion of one or more residency programs and/or fellowships accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME} or equivalent in a specialty appropriate to their assigned specialty duties.

    Licenses and/or Certifications Required
    • A valid license to practice medicine in the State of California.
    • Current board certification in an American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) specialty or subspecialty appropriate for their assigned specialty duties.
    • A valid Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration and number for prescribing controlled substances.
    • Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator (CPR/AED) certification as appropriate for the assigned duties.

    *Note: In accordance with Executive Order 943 a physician can be given clinical privileges pending initial certification, but must be board certified as soon as possible, but no later than two years after the date of hire.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • One or more years of post-residency psychiatric clinical experience in a college health service or with adolescent or young adult age groups.
    • Experience working on a multidisciplinary team.

    Specialized Skills
    • Computer skills competency, including word processing, email, and electronic medical records documentation.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Ability to manage a challenging workload, being flexible and accepting of same day changes made in the patient scheduling, while maintaining positive and respectful relationships with colleagues and students.

    Compensation and Benefits

    Starting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $16,182 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $12,819 - $24,950 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

    SDSU Vaccine Policy

    In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. Individuals are considered fully vaccinated for five months after their final dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or for two months after receiving the only dose of a single-dose vaccine. Afterward a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated.

    The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU's COVID-19 testing program.
