    $2,500 Sign On Bonus Available*Reports to the Laboratory Manager (BMG). Examines and tests human specimens for purposes of obtaining information for the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of patients or for providing information to others who will diagnose and treat patients.

    Examines and tests human specimens to obtain information for the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of patients in accordance with established standards and practices by:


    • Receiving and collecting specimens for laboratory testing including drawing blood, collecting urine and other body materials and fluids from patients.
    • Performing blood analysis in chemistry, hematology, immunology, microbiology, and general lab as ordered by physicians.
    • Performing and interpreting wet mounts, gram strains, urinalysis, and other tests as ordered on other body fluids.
    • Notifying physicians of critical lab values immediately.
    • Performing EKGs, spirometry, and Holter hookup and scanning and maintaining log.
    • Preparing paperwork, computer orders, and specimens for referral labs.

    Performs laboratory report functions by:

    • Maintaining daily patient log and entering test results on forms. Distributing reports to physicians' offices.
    • Maintaining file of standing lab and future lab orders for patients. Maintaining files of orders and test results for two years.
    • Obtaining lab charge from computer system, documenting on billing ticket, and checking for associated diagnosis for billing purposes.
    • Checking and correcting the Lab information systems for tests referred out.
    • Keeping quality control and maintenance records up-to-date, adhering to the laboratory's quality control policies, and documenting all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.
    • Keeping lab manual up-to-date.
    • Maintaining records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.
    • Documenting all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the lab's established performance specifications.
    Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:


    • Performing minor maintenance and repairs on equipment, following the laboratory's established corrective action, policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
    • Keeping inventory and ordering laboratory supplies.
    • Maintaining cleanliness of laboratory, cleaning spills with special attention to body fluid precautions and contaminated waste disposal per OSHA guidelines.
    • Identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results; correcting problem or immediately notifying the technical consultant, clinical consultant or director.
    • Attending required meetings and participating on committees as requested.
    • Performing other job related assignments and special projects as assigned.

    Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:

    • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
    • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
    • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
    • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
    • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
    • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
    • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
    • Complies with established organization and department policies.
    • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

    Education and Experience


    • The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of a high school diploma, graduation from a technical school as a medical laboratory technician, and current ASCP, NCA, or equivalent certification. One year related medical laboratory experience is preferred.
    Knowledge & Skills


    • Requires in-depth knowledge of medical terminology, laboratory equipment and testing to perform lab tests, quality control checks and maintain instrumentation and skill in performing a full range of laboratory tests.
    • Demonstrates ability to anticipate and react calmly to emergency situations.
    • Requires ability to follow universal precaution and maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
    • Demonstrates well developed interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written, necessary to maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, other team members, and the public.
    • Demonstrates ability to read and understand information about instrumentation in the laboratory field and follow written protocols.
