    The responsibilities include hands on clinical work, oversight, and administration of all aspects of the service, including an extensive research program and guidance and training for medical residents and other trainees.


    • Provides guidance and support to the Advanced Practice Provider (APP) assigned to Cardiology/ Medicine Service in their respective areas of expertise.
    • Provides guidance and supervision for the medical students and residents (interns, residents, and/or fellows) assigned to Medicine Service/subspecialty services and clinics according to the standards outlined in Center Policy Memorandum, 11-4, "Supervision of Postgraduate Residents," when assigned to do so by the Chief, Medicine Service. Participates in and attends medical center committees and/or teams as assigned by the Chief, Medicine Service and in his/her absence or absence of their respective Section Chief.
    • Participates in various facility programs designed to enhance and improve the delivery of patient care services, such as Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) teams, as assigned by Chief of Cardiology.
    • Demonstrates commitment to high quality customer service, including specific measures identified as performance goals by the Medical Center.
    • Adheres to all information security and privacy measures set by VHA and the Medical Center.
    • The incumbent will ensure all actions comply with Veterans Health Administration guidelines for Cardiology Section of Medical Service. The incumbent will work with the Section Chief of Cardiology to assist in ensuring adequate coverage of clinical programs, testing, and consultation coverage; assist in the ongoing assessment of cardiology programs for adequacy and appropriateness of offerings; and participate in development and implementation of quality improvement (QI) processes and projects.
    • Patients seen have a wide range of medical problems; the cardiologist will provide all critical duties relating to the delivery of care for cardiology patients and report any discrepancies to the Section Chief and Chief of Medicine.
    • The incumbent is responsible for the daily administrative and clinical operations pertaining to their section/specialty of Cardiology Services, as assigned by the Section Chief. The incumbent will, as defined by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the Subspecialty Board of Cardiology, admit, evaluate, diagnose, and provide treatment. The incumbent will take part in continuing medical
    education and quality assurance activities.

    Cardiology physicians will be required to round on consults on the Intensive Care Unit, acute medical and surgical wards and emergency room as appropriate.


    • The Cardiologist physician may need to respond to codes or other emergencies within the facility.
    • On call Cardiology physician will provide coverage "inpatient and emergencies". On call duties are typically divided among all available providers for the rotation.
    • Shifts are subject to change to ensure efficient use of medical center resources and appropriate levels of care are maintained.

    • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
    • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
    • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification

    VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.)

    Approved residencies are:
    (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR
    [(3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.

    Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs).

    Additional Requirement:
    The incumbent is a board-certified cardiology physician with advanced clinical
    experience as well as demonstrated administrative and leadership skills.
    This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

    Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine.

    The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed.


    Approved schools are:

    • Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or
    • Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
    • For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. [If the applicant does not claim an ECFMG certificate, facility officials must still confirm that the medical school meets (or met) ECFMG eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated.]

    NOTE:

    The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities.
