    JOB TITLE: Civic Center Stagehand

    CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt Part Time

    DEPARTMENT: Civic Center

    SUPERVISOR: Civic Center Technical Director

    SALARY: to per Hour

    GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

    The Stagehand crew works on an as-needed basis for staffing large productions hosted by the Cheyenne Civic Center. Demand for these positions varies from production to production and from season to season. Positions vary in terms of both required experiences and length of commitment and are paid on an hourly basis. The Civic Center utilizes Stagehands in the following production areas:

  • Carpenters: construction, painting, set assembly.
  • Riggers: rigging, fly operators.
  • Electricians (Lighting): hanging fixtures, cabling, maintenance, focus calls, board operators, follow spot operation.
  • Audio: speaker rigging/placement, cabling, networking, board operation, recording.
  • Video: camera configuration and operation, console operation, live stream configuration and management.
  • Wardrobe: dressers, wigs, stitchers.
  • Hospitality: runners, planners, food preparation, shopping.
  • Props: painting and stitching.
  • Wardrobe: dressers, wigs, stitchers.
  • General Labor: Loading, unloading, pushing, lifting, cleaning/maintenance.
  • These positions are primarily needed for load in and strike calls (split shift), individuals with more experience with production may be requested to work during performances.

    PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Works well with others, maintains a positive working relationship with all Civic Center employees, patron, and clients.
  • Assist in the assembly and disassembly of show productions.
  • Loading and unloading trucks.
  • Construction of set pieces, risers, musical equipment.
  • Spotlight operation during shows.
  • Lighting, Video, and Sound configuration and operation.
  • Movement of goods including furniture, road cases, and miscellaneous equipment.
  • SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required.

  • Ability to work with well with others under extreme conditions and for long hours.
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to be punctual for work.
  • Ability to work overtime hours under special circumstances.

  • Ability to read, write and communicate with others.
  • Ability to make logical decisions.
  • Ability to lift 30 lbs. to chest height unassisted
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during work including City officials, employees, vendors, contractors, Touring Show Staff, and the general public.
  • QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB

    Required:

    General skills and responsibilities vary by position, experience working in a professional theater or other backstage setting is a plus, but not required.

    Other skills may include:

  • Ability to follow backstage protocol as prescribed by the venue and performers.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Framing & Finish Carpentry.
  • Basic understanding of live audio
  • Basic understanding of live video
  • Rigging skills.
  • Basic electricity and stage lightning skills.
  • Equipment repair.
  • Computer skill related to office software, lighting, or sound systems & controllers.
  • Strong sewing skills with understanding of garment construction.
  • Installation and configuration of projection equipment.
  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading, and writing. The employee is also required to maintain physical condition necessary for operating assigned equipment, walking, standing, kneeling, repeated bending or sitting for prolonged periods of time and lifting to 30 pounds. Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions demonstrating intellectual capabilities.

    Working Environment:

    Fast paced work environment, around large and (or) heavy equipment, which can be moving in any number of ways, including flying in from above. This can sometimes present some hazardous situations. The backstage environment can be closely compared to that of a heavy construction site. The use of Personal Protective Equipment can (and will) be encouraged when necessary.

    Environmental Conditions:

    Mostly indoor working environment but may be subject to hot and cold environments when working outdoors. Some employees work in confined working spaces, and several assignments require working at heights of 50 or higher. This position requires the employee to work irregular hours, including nights and weekends, and long days (sometimes longer than 16 hours).
