    Job Summary/Basic Function
    About This Role:
    The Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music at Lamar University is seeking a highly qualified candidate for Assistant Professor of Music (Jazz Band Director/Applied Saxophone) beginning August 2024. Candidates with enthusiasm and a vision to work within a growing department are encouraged to apply. In this position, the successful candidate will develop, sustain, and promote Lamar University's jazz band, the Cardinal Jazz Orchestra, as well as the saxophone studio, with an emphasis on recruitment and retention, as well as mentoring students throughout their degree. They will also coordinate and direct the annual Jimmy Simmons Jazz Festival, an event funded by a significant endowment. The successful candidate will also demonstrate the ability to work effectively with the department's other instrumental ensembles and will participate in departmental performances and outreach activities, specifically in collaboration with colleagues. Candidates with a background in performing and teaching a variety of musical genres, especially jazz performance and pedagogy, are encouraged to apply. The faculty member in this position will be expected to establish a positive regional, state, and national reputation as a teacher, performer, and director.
    What You'll Do – Position Responsibilities

    Teaching responsibilities of the successful candidate will include directing the Lamar University Cardinal Jazz Orchestra (big band) as well as teaching applied saxophone lessons, saxophone studio, chamber music and jazz combo coaching, repertoire and pedagogy, and other instructional activities within the candidate's areas of expertise, according to the needs of the department. The successful candidate will also coordinate and direct the annual Jimmy Simmons Jazz Festival, an event funded by endowment which involves guest artist(s) and inviting area jazz bands to campus for clinics and evaluation. Additional faculty duties include student recruitment, creative/scholarly activity, and participation in departmental, college and university service. The faculty member in this position will collaborate closely with faculty in facilitating activities within the instrumental areas. The successful candidate will assist the department in maintaining positive relationships with area public schools, junior colleges, and private instructors.

    Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience)
    • A doctorate in music is required (candidates who are ABD will be considered.)


    Preferred Qualifications (Education & Experience)
    • Artist-level performing and directing experience in Jazz and other styles/genres as well as excellent teaching skills are expected.
    • Successful college/university teaching and festival organization experience is preferred. Strong departmental citizenship and a cooperative attitude among colleagues, students, and staff is expected of all faculty. The candidate must be a positive advocate for the university both on and off campus. They should also demonstrate proficient verbal and written communication skills and exhibit strong organizational, management, and leadership skills.
