    Position: Clinical Lab Assistant

    Facility: Legent Orthopedic + Spine Surgical Hospital

    Location: San Antonio, Tx

    Shift: PRN

    POSITION: Clinical Lab Assistant

    This position description has been designed to indicate the general nature and level of work performed by employees within this classification.     POSITION SUMMARY:

    The Clinical Lab Assistant provides phlebotomy and basic laboratory testing for the patient population, as needed. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. This is a non-exempt position.

    POSITION'S ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Collects and/or prepares human samples for analysis in a timely, efficient manner.
    • Stocks laboratory supplies in the laboratory and on the nursing units.
    • Performs low complexity testing under the supervision of a medical technologist.
    • Uses computer to log in patients 'samples, perform inquires and print summaries.
    • Performs basic preventative maintenance, such as temperature checks.
    • Exhibits knowledge of basic development of patients as noted above.
    • Provides age specific data on patients as noted above.
    • Communicates with the family or significant other of the patients, as noted above, when necessary.
    • Prepare and maintain accurate laboratory records.
    • Label specimens accurately and distribute them to the appropriate department.
    • Perform quality control as directed by the Laboratory Manager.
    • Clean and maintain work area and all lab equipment and supplies.
    • All other duties as assigned.

    OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Completes required orientation as directed by facility.
    • Follows facility and OSHA safety rules and procedures while on assignment.
    • Respects cultural and religious practices of patients.
    • Upholds HIPAA regulations.
    • Punctual and dependent for assigned/confirmed shifts.

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

    • Ability to organize and prioritize work for timely completion
    • Effective communication skills, both verbally and in writing
    • Able to easily understand complex instructions
    • Able and willing to maintain strict level of confidentiality regarding laboratory results and records
    • Excellent computer skills
    • Ability to handle confidential information in a discreet, professional manner.
    • Must be detail-orientated; accuracy is imperative.
    • Excellent organizational and analytical skills.
    • Good interpersonal skills and communication.
    • Strong computer skills; Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
    • Must be comfortable working with hazardous materials and must comply with all health and safety regulations.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    • Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate.
    • On-the-job training or completion of clinical lab assistant training program.
    • Requires two-years of experience assisting in patient care with a focus in the area of lab services.
