- Assist in the planning and direction of team practices.
- Attend team practices, team meets, and regular coaches meetings.
- Assist in development of team events and lesson plans.
- Assist in coordinating team entry information.
- Report specific problems or needs to supervisor or designated staff person.
- Know emergency procedures and be able to demonstrate them.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisor or designated staff person.
- Demonstrate and support the objectives of the Association as embodied in the mission statement and values.
- Ability to read, write, and perform simple mathematical functions
- Completion of high school or equivalent
- One year competitive coaching experience
- Working knowledge of competitive teams
- Training needed prior to starting if hired:
- United States Masters Swimming Coach with DSMY Certification
- American Red Cross Safety Training for Swim Coaches (Lifeguard certification will be accepted with proof of successful completion of the online Safety Training for Swim Coaches certification)
- YMCA Principles of Competitive Swimming and Diving
- Registered USA Swimming Coach
- Intro to Y's Cause & Culture Online Course - prior to starting if hired.
- Additional training to be completed within the first 30 days and maintained afterwards.
- Ability to work with diverse group of people
- Good communication skills
- Ability to build rapport, create relationship and to motivate members
- Ability to demonstrate proper techniques
- Ability to maintain control even when distracted by noise and activity
- Ability work with minimal supervision
- Attend training and/or courses as required by the YMCA
- Attend training and/or courses as required to maintain Registered USA Swimming and USMS Coaching Designation (Masters Coaches only)
- Ability to demonstrate a desire to serve others, fulfill community needs and take the initiative to assist in developing others
- Ability to make sound judgments in all situations and transfer learning from one situation to another
- Respond to questions and concerns of program participants and families.
- Good organizational skills
- Ability to step in as a lead coach when the head coach is not present or available

HOURS/DAYS SCHEDULE: Evenings and Weekends
HOURLY PAY RATE: $11.00-$13.00/hour, based on experience and credentials

POSITION OVERVIEW:
Operating within the policies, procedures, and practices of the YMCA of Greater Des Moines, this position is responsible for planning, managing and directing teams and for ensuring the safety of participants.
