    Occ Summary


    The Nursing Assistant (NA) is a patient care supp ort partner with theRegistered Nurse (RN) and/or Licensed Practical Nurs e (LPN) and performswork as delegated by the RN or LPN.

    The NA provides direct care topatients and assists with non-direct patient care unit coo rdination.

    Theindividual in this position is expected to perform basic c are andcomfort standards as well as have knowledge of the patient popula tionneeds in the assigned work area.

    In addition, the NA is expected toa ssist the RN in the care of acutely ill patients.

    This individual isexpe cted to practice medical asepsis, respect the dignity and privacy ofever y patient and family, and to respect cultural differences duringpatient care.

    They are expected to know andadhere to all basic policiesand proc edures and respond appropriately during emergency situations.

    They are ex pected to maintain the patient/family environment, performgeneral unit u pkeep, order and maintain unit equipment, and ordersupplies as needed, w ith or without direct supervision.

    The NA isexpected to use accurate ver bal and written communication and todocument patient care appropriately in the electronic health record.

    Perform tasks within the scope of a Nurs ing Care Assistant I and II asdefined by the NC Board of Nursing.

    Work Performed

    Prepare patients, equipment and supplies for specific procedures andprovide manual assistance as required.
    Obtain and record patient data for medical records noting and informingRN/LPN of i nformation collected.

    Administer treatment and personal care procedures t o patients including,but not limited to, feeding, bathing, hair care, ch anging clothing, nailcare, bed-making, assisting with ambulation, enemas , skin care, andbowel and bladder elimination; provide such additional c are as requiredto meet the personal needs and comfort of assigned patien ts.

    Participate in teaching activities by reinforcing teaching instructed byRN and/or providers as needed.
    Assist providers and nurses with physic al examinations by helpingposition patients, changing non-sterile dressi ng and weighing patients.
    Take and record vital signs, record I&O, and ap ply ice bags. Note andreport any changes in patient's condition. Turn an d position patients,set up and feed patients as necessary, provide patie nts with freshdrinking water.

    Perform fingersticks for blood glucose test ing, with appropriatetraining, document and notify RN/LPN.Assist with ad mission, discharge, and transportation of patients.

    Followstandard precautions and use personal protective equipment as required.
    Collect, delive r and conduct routine tests on patient specimens. Cleanassigned area; st ock and replenish supplies and equipment as required.
    Participate in own professional development by maintaining requiredskills validation and at tending educational offerings. Support thedevelopment of other staff and formal learners.
    May also perform clean dressing change for wounds over 48 hours old.
    Perform other related duties incidental to work described h erein.

    In addition to the NCA I duties outlined, the following duties may beperformed:

    sterile dressing change for wounds over 48 hours old andwo und irrigation; IV fluid assistance activities; oral/nasogastricfeeding; urinary catheterization and irrigation; oxygen therapy,including room s et-up and monitoring flow-rate; break up and removal offecal impaction; oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal suctioning;tracheotomy care; ostomy car e and irrigation.

    These additional skillswill require competency validat ionon hire as well as annual competencyvalidation.

    Knowledg e, Skills and Abilities

    Working knowledge of sterile techniques a nd special procedures that areapplicable to work performed.
    Working knowl edge of procedures and techniques involved in administeringroutine and s pecial treatments to patients.
    Working knowledge of principles and practi ces of providingnonprofessional bedside patient care.
    Working knowledge o f sanitation, personal hygiene and basic health andsafety precautions ap plicable to work in a hospital.
    Working knowledge of infection control pr ocedures and safetyprecautions.
    Ability to withstand prolonged standing a nd walking.
    This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending,kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling and climbing all day.

    Th eemployee must frequently lift or move objects and patients weighing ove r35 pounds with assistance or appropriate lift equipment.

    Ability to unde rstand and follow oral and written instructions.
    Ability to document and communicate pertinent information using computerand/or paper documentati on tools.
    Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationshi ps withpatients and hospital staff.
    Working knowledge of the organization and physical layout of thehospital.
    Pre-employment Physical Capacity Tes ting may be required.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education

    Completion of Level I Nurse Aide education program approved by the Nursing.

    North Carolina Board of Nursing or successful completion of the NC - approved Nurse Aide I competency test and completion of Level II Nurse Aide education programs approved by the North Carolina Board of High School diploma or equivalent required.

    Listed as NA I with the Division of Facility Services with no substantiated findings of abuse, fraud, neglect or misappropriation of property.

    Listed as NA II with the North Carolina Board of Nursing.

    BCLS certification must be maintained/completed by the end of new hire orientation, which typically takes place during the first week of employment.
