    Job Description Summary:

The Department of Cancer Biology at the University of Kansas Medical Center is seeking a highly motivated candidate to work in the laboratory of Dr.

Michael Washburn as a postdoctoral trainee in the field of Computational Quantitative Proteomics and Integrated Structural Modeling. The Washburn lab investigates how chromatin remodeling complexes and protein interaction networks assemble in normal and diseased cells.

The project involves using state-of-the-art computational methods to build integrated structural models of protein complexes and protein interaction networks from cross linking mass spectrometry datasets.

The laboratory has extensive datasets being generated in multiple areas of human biology and disease using powerful protein mass spectrometry systems including a recently installed ThermoFisher Orbitrap Ascend Tribrid Mass Spectrometer.

The successful candidate is expected to perform research by contributing to the design of experiments, data acquisition, data analysis and interpretation, manuscript preparation, and mentor junior researchers.

    Job Description:
    Required Qualifications

    Education:
PhD in biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology, computational biology, or related field.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Experience:

    • Experience in computational analysis of large-scale biological datasets.
    • Experience with AlphaFold, I-Tasser, HADDOCK, Integrative Structural Modeling, and R or other related programming languages are particularly desirable.
    • Experience in biochemistry and structural biology techniques.

    Skills:

    • Excellent organizational skills and time management skills.
    • Ability to work independently and as a team.
    • Track record of publications.
    • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
    • Demonstrated research experience and familiarity with standard computational biology techniques.
    Job Duties Outlined

    Research Overview:

Work with PI/faculty mentor and other laboratory members, to analyze and interpret large scale quantitative proteomics datasets generated using cross linking mass spectrometry studies on affinity purified protein complexes, isolated organelles from cells and tissues, and complete networks from cells and tissues.

While the primary focus will be on human chromatin remodeling complexes, there will be ample opportunity to collaborate with and participate in disease-based projects (cancer, neurological, pulmonary, metabolic, etc.).

The laboratory has many active and emerging projects applying these methods to human health and disease.

    • Interpretation of experimental results and analysis of data, to use in publications, grants and determining next steps in the needed for the research.
    • Perform experiments requiring the flexibility and adaptability to execute a wide range of skills to perform a variety of computational experimentation and data analysis. This includes but is not limited to working with AlphaFold, I-Tassed, HADDOCk, the Integrative Modeling Platform, Cytoscape, and computational approaches found in R.

    Postdoc Expectations:

The Postdoc will be expected to complete research projects under the guidance of the faculty mentor, record and interpret the results of their experiments in an (electronic) laboratory notebook, prepare publication-quality manuscripts (including figures and tables) and publish in peer-reviewed literature.

    • Read literature articles, develop new ideas, and assimilate the information into his/her project design/interpretation.
    • Dissemination of studies: Interact on a regular basis with their faculty mentor and members of the laboratory to discuss experimental design and interpretation of results.
    • Present research aims and findings at department seminars and at scientific meetings. Write and publish their results as first author in abstracts, manuscripts, and posters.
    • Submit fellowship applications, as eligible, to bolster research funding and CV building for projects.
    • Interact with KU Cancer Center donors and local cancer affiliates.

    Compliance:

Attend and maintain compliance on all orientation and training sessions designated by the University and the Cancer Biology Department and attend departmental seminars and regular lab meetings.

    • Perform other duties assigned by PI and faculty mentor.
