General Function:
A Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps Teacher, also known as a Naval Science Instructor,
is responsible for instructing high school students in a military-based curriculum focused on leadership
development, citizenship, physical fitness, and military history, preparing them for potential future service
in the armed forces while also maintaining a strong academic focus within the classroom; their duties
include teaching military drills, leading extracurricular activities like drill teams, and fostering a sense of
discipline and responsibility among cadets, all while adhering to military regulations and school policies.
Provides an atmosphere which allows students to have opportunity to fulfill their potential for intellectual,
emotional, physical and psychological growth. Responsible for organizing and implementing an
instructional program and for providing direct instruction in subject matter and skills that will result in
student achievement in accordance with each student's ability.
Education/Training/Experience
(Basic minimum requirements are subject to change from time to time to meet the needs of the District.)
Minimum: Bachelor's Degree Required. Must be a retired U.S. Navy, Marine Corps or Coast Guard
E6 and/or above with retirement taking place in the last 3 years from date of application for position.
Must complete all requirements for NJROTC Naval Science Instructor certification.
Preferred: Bilingual English/Spanish. At least one year's previous experience.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
Ability to lift and move boxes of curricular material and other equipment
Ability to conduct full days of training

Knowledge of general office machines and telephone systems

Essential Job Functions:
Performs all functions in accordance with established policies, procedures, safety and environmental
regulations, facility and computer security policies and procedures. Functions are subject to change from
time to time to meet the needs of the organization. Current essential responsibilities include, but are not
Santa Fe Public Schools limited to the following:
1. Instruct and support ROTC cadets in reaching and maintaining proficiency in military and all other
applicable subjects. Seek out new and alternative instructional and motivational techniques for
improved instruction.
2. Conduct ROTC curriculum training in accordance with applicable law, and Military and Cadet
Command regulations and policies.
3. Adhere to and/or prepare a weekly training schedule to include daily class topics, all military
events, military team practice, meetings and the uniform of the day.
4. Perform administrative tasks including maintenance of electronic student records, enrollment
reports and other student reports as required.
5. Carry out logistics tasks including preparing requisitions for items that may be necessary for
classrooms and the instructional process.
6. Market the ROTC program in the school and community in an effort to recruit and retain new
students.
7. Assist in the development of the community relations' plan using military expertise to expand the
school's outreach.
8. Counsel and mentor students on their military and academic performance as members of the
Corps of Cadets. Assist interested students in applying for ROTC scholarships and completing
service academy applications.
9. Participate in staff meetings, school committees, and student activities.
10. Interpret and/or implement school, program and military regulatory guidance.
11. Conduct risk assessment to mitigate the possibility of an accident for all activities; observe and
enforce Navy and school safety guidelines.
12. Participate in instructor conferences and other professional development opportunities offered by
the school district. Meet or exceed continuing education requirements of the state, school district
and the specific military branch.
13. Facilitate and participate in ROTC marching.
14. Organize, coordinate, and direct ROTC activities in the school, including team building, drill and
academic competitions, service learning projects, awards ceremonies, military balls, and other
activities.
15. Perform other duties as assigned.
Salary Range and Benefits:
(Salary determined based on Military retirement pro-rated to a 10 month contract) Medical, dental, and
vision benefits are available to full and part-time employees that work a minimum of 20 hours per week.

Physical/Cognitive Requirements:
Regularly required to stand; move throughout the room and/or facility; communicate verbally and
electronically; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and
arms. Frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl. Occasionally required to sit, climb, and
balance, and drive. Regularly required to lift or exert force of up to 25 pounds; frequently required to lift or
exert force of up to 50 pounds; and occasionally required to lift or exert force of up to 100 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision and the ability to adjust
focus.
Environmental Conditions:
Work is performed in a school setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and
extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be
required. Some occasional travel is required for meetings, conference, JROTC competitive events, and
orientation trips.
