    Description


    The Ophthalmic Technician assists the Ophthalmologist and other technical support personnel to perform diagnostic tests necessary for the evaluation of patient eye health, procedures and vision testing/correction.


    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
    Performs preliminary screening examinations for physician review including, but not limited to, central and peripheral visual field tests; ocular motility tests; color vision tests; pharmacological pupil tests; tonometry, tomography and tension tomography tests to determine intraocular pressure and pupil testing for size, equality and reaction prior to dilation

    Examines the cornea, lens and anterior chamber of the eye using a slit lamp and note variations from normal

    Measures acuity of the patient with and without glasses for distance and near vision; obtains optical and lensometry measurements to determine lens prescription and correct acuity problems; records findings on patient chart

    Obtains topographical measurements of the eye to include corneal diameter and curvature; assists the physician in fitting patients with contact lenses and evaluating lens fit with a biomicroscope; instructs patients on the proper techniques used in caring for, inserting, and wearing contact lenses

    Obtains medical and personal data for patient charts; screens patients for conditions excluding ocular examination

    Arranges for laboratory and other tests, ophthalmic photography, outpatient studies, and patient admissions and surgery as requested by the physician; alleviate patient and family concerns by explaining diagnostic procedures and method of treatment

    Calibrates and maintains all instruments used including, but not limited to bio-microscopes, lensometer, keratometer, tangent screen, slit lamp and tonometers; clean and stock consultation rooms and microbiology laboratory with drugs and other supplies as needed

    Sterilizes and sets up instruments for ophthalmic surgical procedures

    Assists with minor office surgery, laser treatments and operating room surgery as required

    Other duties as assigned


    Minimum Requirements:
    Successful completion of Ophthalmic Technician training program

    Certification as an Ophthalmic Technician by State/Contract requirements

    One (1) year of experience as an Ophthalmic Technician preferred

    Complies with all relevant professional standards of practice

    Participation and completion of Amergis' Competency program when applicable

    Current CPR if applicable

    TB Questionnaire, PPD or chest x-ray if applicable

    Current Health certificate (per contract or state regulation)

    Must meet all federal, state and local requirements

    Successful completion of new hire training as applicable to job site

    Understand patient confidentiality and HIPAA requirements

    Ability to effectively elicit/provide information to and from appropriate individuals (including, but not limited to, supervisors, co-workers, clients) via strong communication skills; proficiency in the English language is required

    Computer proficiency required

    Must be at least 18 years of age
